Discovering odd and unusual Britain

Every November, The Bridge Inn at Santon in Cumberland hosts the World’s Biggest Liar Competition.

Competitors have a maximum of five minutes to spin a suitable yarn without the aid of a script or any props.

The event is held in memory of the 19th-century publican,Will Ritson, who was renowned for his tall stories.

It is perhaps interesting to note that politicians, lawyers and UKA are prevented from entering the contest because they are considered to have an unfair advantage.
