Lily B Match day 2 – Croydon

04th June 2016

It was always going to be difficult to match our performance of the first Lily B meeting of the season. However, despite notable absentees due to half-term and exams, we were only narrowly denied victory by 5 points!!!

The weather was warm but overcast. The first part of the battle was to fight through the traffic to get the track on time. This time around we only had 30 point scoring athletes compared to the massive team of 39 we had for our first match at Kingsmeadow. Given this fact, coming second was pretty amazing, so well done to everyone.

Guildford & Godalming AC

Kingston AC & Poly Harriers

Herne Hill Harriers

South London Harriers

Holland Sport

Dorking & Mole Valley AC

Again we had 4 girls turn out for the under 11’s, two of which are new recruits having tried things out at our KACPH trials back in April. A big welcome to Ashlee Hambling & Bethan Norvill and we hope to see you again next time. With 4 girls we were able to field an U11 relay team which the kids always enjoy at the end of the day.

Our U13 team of only 9, managed 12 PBs between them. Notable performances for Lucy Atkins breaking 14s in the 100m and for Alix Baccardax smashing 16s of her best in the 1500m. For the U13s we also welcome a newcomer, Camilla McFarlane competing in a couple of scoring events and bringing valuable points to the team. Well done girls.

The U15 turn out was slightly better with a total of 10 girls. They managed 6 event wins and a massive total 18 top 3 finishes. Notable athletes here were Hollie Hennessy with a new PB in the hammer throw, Louisa Stoney breaking 13s in the hurdles and Anna Gawander going under 28s in the 200m. A special mention to Gemma Watts who, for the first time in competition, attempted the pole vault clearing 1.70m.

For our U17’s our team of 10 athletes picked up 9 wins. Newcomer Charlotte Josey picked up 2 great wins and 3rd in the triple jump, high jump and shot putt respectively. There was a massive new PB in the javelin for Charlotte Wallis-Sloanes throwing 28.92m, nearly 6m over her previous best.

Athlete of the match T-shirts to Freya John (U13), Hannah Lester (U15) & Eleanor Church (U17). All three scored 15 points each, out of a maximum 18 per athlete, with PBs as well. However the special mention of the meeting goes to Eleanor Church, a sprinter, who helped the team out by running the 800m B string and picking up maximum points!

Thank you also to Frank, Maurice, John Lester, Susan Westley, Kim Hennessy, Brian McLean and Mary Dimbleby for helping out on the day with official duties and team coaching. Please accept my apologies if I have missed anyone.

A big win and a 2nd place puts us in a strong position in the league and with one match to go we will need a strong turn out if we are to end up victorious. At the next meeting we will come up against Croydon for the first time this season and they have won both of their matches so far. We have the athletes to beat them and if we succeed in doing so, with the big points gap from our first match-day win, we should win the league. Match-day 3 (2nd July Guildford).

Individual results are shown overleaf.
