Surrey Ladies League Cross Country – Match 2 Report
The second league match of the season took place at a chilly Mitcham Common on Saturday 3rd December. Some ladies had a hazy memory of the course as our last trip here was almost 4 years ago, whilst for others it was a new venue. The Seniors race was held over a gently undulating 2-lap course measuring 6K.
Senior & Veteran Ladies
We were again missing some of our regular team due to illness and injury and we were also without out match one winner, Phoebe Law. Phoebe had an excellent run the week before finishing 4th at the GB trials had been selected for the GB U20 team at the European Cross Country Championships taking place a week later. Despite missing our absentees we were pleased to field a full team and everyone did well to ensure a good team result of 12th place on the day, keeping us firmly mid-table in Division 2.
First home was Ellie Jennings (U20), making her debut in the Surrey League senior race, in a time of 28:04 for 56th place. Welcome to the team Ellie and well done! Solid runs in support from Liz Richardson (29:37 – 75th) and Jo Murphy (nee Aherne, 30:13 – 85th) followed – Liz, dropping back down in distance after a recent ultra-marathon and Jo, enjoying a return to racing after settling into married life.
The scoring team was completed by Susanne Dietrich in 110th place (31:33) and also a pleasing return after injury for Rosaline Darby (137th – 33:08). Caroline Jeffcote, also had a good run to finish in 180th place (37:21) in a total field of 197 Division 2 athletes. Our ladies team continues to enjoy a fantastic team spirit and thanks go to Nicky Atkins and Nicki Murphy who both, despite the disappointment of injury and being unable to compete, joined us on the day to support theteam.
The Surrey County Championships will be held on 7th January 2017 at Lloyd Park and our next league match will be on 14thJanuary also at Lloyd Park. New members to the team are always welcome and anyone wishing to run should please contact Liz Richardson for further information.
An unusually low turnout for the junior girls saw only our U17s Annabel Hobday (21st place – 16:06) and Rebecca Keddie (30th – 16:51) competing. Both ran well in the combined U15/U17 race over 4K, in a total field of 54 runners. Whilst in the U13 race, over a 3K distance, our only competitor was Alix Baccardax who finished in a creditable 21st place.
