Match Report 2 – YDL Lower Age Group – Horsham, Saturday 19th May 2018

Saturday in Horsham was marked with gorgeous sunshine and a steady stream of ice lollies appearing in the stands. School trips, school matches and street parties for the royal wedding took their toll on our eventual squad numbers. There were a number of very welcome new faces making their debuts at the Sussex track, and some stellar performances from those that made the trip, including a new club record for Lucy Atkins in the U15 Girl’s 300m.

The Overall Result

Once again K&P started strongly. Early points updates had K&P listed as 2nd. As the day drew on our depleted numbers left several events unfilled and we dropped down to 5th place. We will need to field a strong team in the remaining two meetings at Poole (Sunday 17th June) and at home in Kingston (Saturday 21st July) to stay in the division.

U13 Girls

Nelly Priest achieved an AAA Grade 4 time of 11.2 in the 75m and followed that up with a PB in the Shot of 6.09m. Ava John and Jocelyn Booth smashed their PBs in the 150m racing over the line in 21.1 and 21.9 respectively.

Not to be outdone by the sprinters Evie Priest and Jocelyn Booth took huge chunks out of their personal bests in the 1200m – Evie recording an AAA Grade 1 time of 4:10.7 and Jocelyn winning the B race in 4:22.5.

In the Field Zana Anderson jumped a Grade 4 height of 1.25. Evie also set a PB with the Javelin. In the Hurdles Bethan Norvill equalled her PB of 15.4 a feat she matched with her High Jump of 1.20.

Congratulations to Ava, Hannah and Nelly for taking on their maximum allowance of individual events with Ava and Nelly also running the relay. A welcome to Rosanna Walker who chose the YDL for her club debut, running a non-scoring 800m. YDL debutant Eva Cerilli also took on the non-scoring 800m and competed in the Long Jump as a scoring athlete.

Tired legs saw the relay team that had won the opening round miss out on a podium spot on the Horsham track.

U13 Girls (10 athletes) : Zana Anderson, Jocelyn Booth, Eva Cerilli, Hannah Choudhury, Caitlyn Harvey, Ava John, Bethan Norvill, Evie Priest, Nelly Priest and Rosanna Walker.

U13 Boys

In the 100m A race Ned Rose equalled his PB whilst George Rees bettered his in the B race. Making his debut for the club Roel Sodusta raced to a 14.0s in a non-scoring 100m and to a 200m time of 28.3s. Finnian Chang and Club Debutant Rishi Dowell set PBs in the 75m Hurdles of 16.3s and 16.2s respectively.

In a rare departure from the 1500m Tom Wilson raced the 800m to a PB of 2:25.3. Tom’s eyes are now firmly set on his older brother Olly’s club record.

On a track that was stunned by the performance of William Rabjohns (a Poole AC athlete representing Team Dorset) who won the 1500m by over 200 metres in 4:32.8, our own Sam Atkins ran a measured race to wipe over 13 seconds off his PB, finishing 2nd in 5:01.9.

In the Field the U13 Boys set a load of PBs : Alex Cronje in the Long Jump, both Ned Rose and Finnian Chang in the High Jump, Sam Atkins and club debutant Dylan Dowell in the Shot. Dylan’s first ever competition saw him throw 19.88m in the javelin – there will be some AAA Graded performances to come from that quarter.

The relay quartet of Dylan, Ned, George and Roel were just pipped into 2nd place by the Team Dorset team in a time of 56.3s. Thanks to Richard Holt for helping the boys with their final preparations. With a little bit more preparation this squad should be tilting at the club record of 55.7s set back in 2015.

U13 Boys (9 athletes) : Sam Atkins, Finnian Chang, Alex Cronje, Dylan Dowell, Rishi Dowell, George Rees, Ned Rose, Roel Sodusta and Tom Wilson.

U15 Girls

With only 7 girls to fill 24 slots and 2 relays and a maximum of 3 events and a relay per girl Saturday was always going to be tough.

Kira Holt set another AAA Grade 1 performance winning the A hurdles, lowering her PB to 11.8s. She also lowered her PB in the 100m to 13.1s and matched it to win the B 200m. Jemima Harcourt set a PB in the B hurdles with a time of 13.6s that would have seen her well placed in the A Final. Lucy Atkins won the A 200m convincingly. In the 300m both Lucy Atkins and Emilia Chittenden set PBs of 42.2s and 46.1s respectively. Lucy’s time broke the record set by Mary Iheke in 2005.

Milla Maritz, in her club debut, set a PB in the 1500m and surprised herself with a first ever attempt at the Javelin by finishing up as the K&P A athlete. Tejal Ramphul, in her YDL debut, ran in the 100m and the Relay, as well as setting a PB in the Long Jump.

With so few athletes the Field entries were sparse. Emilia Chittenden raised her High Jump PB by 3cm clearing an AAA Grade 4 height of 1.48m.

Special mention must go to Esme Cerilli for taking on 3 field events in the Hammer, the Discus and the Javelin. Esme started the day with a PB in the Hammer before putting more than 3 metres on to her Discus PB. Having survived the family ribbing about competing in the field, Lucy Atkins added to her PB haul with a respectable 7.12m in the Shot.

U15 Girls (7 athletes) : Lucy Atkins, Esme Cerilli, Emilia Chittenden, Jemima Harcourt, Kira Holt, Milla Maritz and Tejal Ramphul.

U15 Boys

You can’t ask for more than for an athlete to set a personal best at a meeting. In the Track events on Saturday the U15 Boys recorded PBs in every single individual race. The day started with PBs for Hiren Simmonite and Rory Stratford in the Hurdles. Rory and Dhruv Simmonite then set PBs of 27.6s and 28.5s respectively in the 200m. Hiren tore strips off his with an AAA Grade 4 performance of 12.5s in the 100m whilst in the B 100m Kai Mason lowered his best to 13.2s; Max Dickson won the A 300m comfortably in 39.2s and Dhruv set a PB of 45.6s.

In the longer distances Max set a new best of 2:11.6s in the 800m whilst his school-mate and club debutant, Sam Nesbitt, started his Power of 10 page off with a club season-leading 4:42.9s. Alfie Westley swopped his 800m for a 1500m to avoid a clash with the Discus and duly ran a PB to complete the set for the Boys on the track. Sam crammed a lot into the last hour of the meeting, starting with his first race for the club (the 1500m), closely followed by back to back relays in the 4x100m (3rd) and 4x300m (2nd).

There were more PBs in the Field : Dhruv Simmonite added to the PB he set in the High Jump at the recent Ebbisham meeting, recording 1.40m; Kai grabbed a lot of valuable points in the B Shot and extended his PB; Alfie Westley and Sebastian Chang set bests in the Discus; Seb also set a best in the Hammer whilst Max Dickson had started the day increasing his Hammer PB to 23.79m.

U15 Boys (8 athletes) : Sebastian Chang, Max Dickson, Kai Mason, Sam Nesbitt, Dhruv Simmonite, Hiren Simmonite, Rory Stratford and Alfie Westley.

Officials – Thanks as ever must go to Frank Schubert who led the Field team as our top ranking official, with clip-board wielding assistance from Hugh ‘EDM’ Choudhury and Richard White, and a substantial number of parent volunteers. On the Track side a big thank you goes to Stewart Dickson as our ever-present Timekeeper. James Cronje and Louise Doherty each had a stint on the Track Judge’s stand claim the full 55 points for the team.
