The exact number of runners required for a full scoring team, 10, turned up at Lloyd Park this past Saturday to run at the final Surrey League fixture of the 18/19 season. Although slightly windy, the weather on the day was generally not too bad, though the rain of the previous day made parts of the course (particularly at the far end) pretty treacherous!

As ever this season V40 Matt Atkins was the first man home for K&P in 3rdplace (I will refer to placings in Div 3 in this report), showing no signs that a recent chest infection had held him back in any way. A minute or so behind was Michael Huntley in 7th, another leading scorer this season and 5thplace leading individual runner in Div 3 after 4 matches!

Great to have David Wilby back, and he was next home in 21stfollowed by myself in 22nd. I was then followed by an ever-improving James Robertson in 26th (I suspect and fingers crossed that James is now on a speedy trajectory towards being one of our very leading scorers again after recovering from injury).

A change in the date of a scheduled house move freed Alex Thomas (39th) to attend, his presence a welcome surprise and helped bolster the team. Not far behind him came Andy Arbour (47th), who was in a close contest with 2ndplace season leading V50 Stewart Dickson (50th). Next up was Peter Wilkins, another runner who has had a good season (103rd), and 4thplace leading individual V60 for the season David Greenfield (137th).

Key to our success on the day were the trusty band of supporters who travelled to Croydon- Bob McDonough, Ant Budarkiewicz, my wife Tukki, Graham Huntley and James’ parents. Some of our usual supporters like David Barrington and Geoff Reed were busy at Richmond Park hosting the successful Ladies fixture, very well done to them. Others like Mike May and Cashel Riordan were unable to make the matches this time, but my thanks to them (and all others not mentioned here) who cheered us on at some point this season- it’s really appreciated.

K&P finished in 5thplace on the day, only missing out on 4thby a couple of points. And we finished in 4thplace overall at the end of the season.

My thanks to all who ran in the League this season. In 2019/20 let’s focus again on getting to Div 2, we can do it!
