Surrey Ladies Cross Country League – End of Season Report

This season it was really pleasing to see several younger athletes joining our cross country team and very encouraging to watch their progress over the course of the 4 Surrey League matches. Mae Thompson, Ellie Arnfield and Bella Shepherd Evans (U20) all joined the Senior team for our first match, which saw a promising turnout of 9 athletes and hinted at an enjoyable season ahead.

Mae Thompson led the team home in every match, improving over the season from 13th place in match 1 to finish the season with 2 consecutive 3rd place finishes in the Division 2 races. These performances deservedly earned her the award for Most Improved Female in Cross Country.

The final league match of the season also incorporated our Club Championship races. The titles were closely contested and the 2019/20 Cross Country Club Champions were decided as follows:

U20 – Bella Shepherd Evans
Senior – Mae Thompson
Veterans – Nicky Atkins

The team enjoyed a good turnout at most matches and ran consistently well to ensure 8th place in Division 2 overall for the season – which is a big step forward from recent seasons. In a league ever increasing in size, this finish was a creditable performance for a small team competing against many much larger team squads.

With continued commitment and development next season, I am confident that the team could be in the running to push for promotion to Division 1 (which would be a tremendous achievement! Well done to athletes that competed in the league this season – especially to Mae, Ellie, Nicky Atkins, Liz Richardson and Nicki Murphy who all competed in all 4 matches and also to Caroline Jeffcote who ran in 3 matches and turned out to support the team in the last match despite carrying an injury!

In addition to their success in the Surrey League, the team enjoyed competing in the Surrey Road Relays (where Phoebe Law ran the fastest leg by a female athlete) the Surrey County Championships (with Phoebe finishing 5th overall and the team in 11th place) and the South of England Cross Country Championships (7th place for Phoebe).

I look forward to seeing the team in action again next season!
