Sat 26th June saw a buzz around Kingsmeadow stadium for the first Lily B League match of the season and it was a delight to see our athletes and parents return to enjoy a fantastic sunny day of athletics at our home track. It was the first match in a series of 3 this year as the organisers have had to remove the cup final from the timetable due to covid restrictions. We think the team all agreed, we were very grateful to be back and given the opportunity to meet up once again - missing a year of competitions has been tough for everyone.
It was a great team effort - overall we finished 2nd behind Epsom & Ewell who outnumbered us in many events. Thank you once again to all those who went the extra mile to try a new event for the first time and especially to those that competed in a different event to gain extra points for the team as it's always much appreciated.
The KACPH athletes must have been training so hard over the lockdown and since returning as almost everyone came away with a personal best on the day and quite a few of the girls had a PB in all 3 of three events which is quite extraordinary.
Due to covid restrictions, for U11's only 6 athletes were able to compete in 1 event each and we hope that those athletes picked out of the hat enjoyed your first competition. We do hope that restrictions will be lifted for the 2nd match so that all of the girls will be able to compete and enjoy the day even more next time.
In the Under 13's, a big thank you to Lara Antar for competing in the 1500m, always a tough event and scored valuable points for the team, so much appreciated. Amelia Rowbotham ran the 200m in under 30 seconds and came 1st in the High Jump with an incredible jump of 1.40m, scoring maximum points. Tia Garrard stormed ahead managing to score maximum points in all 3 of her events, with the long jump of 4.48m particularly of note as it puts her currently 8th in the UK.
In the Under 15’s, congratulations to Erin Chandler who got PB's and came first in both of her races. She ran 100m in a very respectable time of 13.1 seconds scoring maximum points in both her events for the A string and Calla Lazou also ran a couple of great races in the B string earning her 2nd place and coming home with a couple of PB's on the day.
We were short of Under 17's as the Surrey schools multi-event champs coincided with the match, as well as the Upper YDL scheduled the following day, so we had several athletes missing. The 4 athletes that did compete all came 2nd in most of their events giving the team a great points total overall. Well done to Poppy Milsom who competed with us for the first time in all 3 sprint events!
Once again, we must thank all of our club officials and parent helpers as we wouldn't have a match without you. At a home match it's more difficult to manage, but the standout parent helper award has to go to Scott Leishman who did the most amazing job from the start of the day until the end collating all of the scores for match 1. We really are truly thankful for that, and to everyone who volunteered and made the day run so smoothly.
Everyone agreed it was a great match and we look forward to meeting up again at Guilford for the 2nd match on 7th August, and at Sutton for the 3rd match on 28th August.
