Here is Frank Schubert's Report on a busy day for the Youth of RBK.
Kingston Borough Schools Cross Country report – 24 November
When the best of Kingston’s young cross country athletes are swarming over Richmond Park, it must be the time of the Kingston Schools Championships. More than 500 runners braved the elements and were as grateful as organisers and marshals when the weather spared us the forecasted downpour.
First on the scene were the primary schools, with 80 girls and 101 boys venturing onto the tough course. Our two girls did well: Sophie Dimbleby despite a sprained ankle ran into 23rd place, and Lily Snelling was close behind as 31st. In the boys’ race Harry Robinson won the first K&P podium place of the day, finishing in 3rd place. Nicholas Rilett was hot on his heels as 7th. Rory Vassell in 17th place and Gian Hobbs as 25th completed an excellent club performance.
With 66 runners, the year 7 field for the girls was nearly as large as for the primary schools. Three of our girls competed, and all finished among the top runners. Having led for the first part of the course, Caitlin Dimbleby in the end narrowly missed the podium in 4th place. She was followed immediately by Nadia Allen as 5th, who helped Tiffin Girls to the School title. Frances Rennie completed the K&P contingent with another top finish as 13th. Ollie Phelps in the year 7 boys’ race achieved the same result, coming 13th in a strong 43-runner field.
The strongest K&P show came in the year 8/9 races. Our girls with Laura Cook (4th), new members Laura Dunkling (5th) and Bridget Langford (6th), Ella Shaw (9th), Naomi Kelly (11th), Vanessa Saunders (34th) and Amy Gooch (47th) did excellently in a large field of 89 runners. A very strong result, both individually and as a team. Many of our girls were key players in the winning Tiffin Girls team. On the boys’ side Sam Vassell went even one better than Laura, racing to the bronze position, although he could not prevent Tiffin Boys taking the team title. Tom Dawson as 26th and Nathan Judson-Richardson as 27th battled it out right to the finish, and Ed Rumbold as 40th out of 70 runners also had a good run. Joe Mallet ran the equivalent competition in the Sutton School Champs, finishing a strong 8th.
As usual, the fields in the older age groups were much smaller. While Tiffin Girls continued their dominance of the school competition, Dominika Wrobel ran into the top 10 (9th). Thrower Rosie Hudson did well to finish mid-field as 16th of 25 competitors. Tiffin boys matched the girls’ result in the year 10/11 boys’ race, where K&P athletes again put up a strong performance. Hopefully soon-to-be club member Ben Grosvenor finished an excellent 4th, while Kiran Richards (17th) and Nikolaj Schubert (18th) left it to the sprint finish to sort their position. Tom Rouvray was immediately behind in 19th place, and Adam Curran (28th) and Stefan Clarke (30th) completed the club contingent.
The best K&P individual results came in the senior races. For the year 12/13 girls Molly Renfer came 2nd, Marion Vincer as 8th ran into the top 10, and Ellie Felicien came in as 12th. On the boys’ side the club only sent in one competitor, but George Corcoran again proved his class by taking the title. The Tiffin schools won both senior team events.
