Report: Surrey League Match 4- Richmond Park, Saturday 12th February 2011
Yesterday saw the final Surrey League match at Richmond Park, hosted by Ranelagh Harriers. It was a relatively fast 5.65 mile course of two laps. Generally it was pretty flat, but at the end of each lap there was a gentle uphill stretch which was pretty knackering, especially second time around!
At the front there was very little (3 seconds) separating Jamie McCullagh and Richard Mathie throughout the race, Jamie narrowly coming out on top in 12th, Richard 13th. Well done guys, both have been our top scorers throughout the season. Andy Arbour wasn’t too far behind in 21st, and, I suspect, would have been in the top 20 had he been fully recovered from a recent chest infection. Grateful of the dry ground and ability to wear trainers to ease Achilles pain I was next in in 27th.(His best ever placing,a fact he modestly omitted. Ed). There was another good run from Michael Huntley (34th) to follow on from his performance at Guildford. In a speedy and impressive first lap, throughout much of the race he was running close to Jamie and Richard.
In 41st place was a new team member, M45 John Wilkinson(a former 3.45.4 1500 man!). Welcome John, very encouraging stuff. Ant Budarkiewicz followed John in 53rd, and seems to be getting back into form for his run at the Nationals next Saturday. Steve Wright was next man in with another useful performance and was followed by Ron Taylor who finished pretty well for someone who started a few minutes late! Last scorer was David Greenfield, who clocked up a few more miles in preparation for his upcoming marathon. Peter Wilkins, Bob McDonough, Geoff Reed(also a late KOer) and David Barrington completed the team line up- great to see another strong turnout for this match.
In the end we finished 5th on the day, but 4th overall in the League. To my mind 4th out of 9 is a pretty good placing, and I know we are not far away from 3rd, or even better.
My thanks to everyone who ran yesterday (and/ or at any of the League matches) and thanks to those who came to support. I look forward to next year.
Matt
