Susanne's report from Priory Park
Surrey Schools XC Champs - report.
Time has moved on, but the results from the Surrey Schools XC Champs on 22nd January in Reigate should not go unnoticed. Apologies, but I didn’t have time to write a report earlier. Full results are on the Surrey Schools Athletic Association’s website.
We had quite a strong K&P representation in the year 8/9 girls’ race. Ellé Butcher (25th), Nadia Allan (32rd), Ella Shaw (34th), Bridget Langford (35th), Laura Cook (41st) had excellent runs and contributed to the Kingston Schools’ team finishing 4th. Laura Dunkling was not her usual self and her 63rd place surely does not reflect on her abilities. Yet, overall, the results show that we have a very good team of Junior distance runners – well done!
The Inter (year 10/11) and Senior girls (year12/13) scored separately, but ran together in the same race. And this was an eye opener! Molly Renfer took 4th place in the Senior’s score list, and Francesca Currie came 14th. Yet, in the race Inter Layla Thompson was only a whisker behind Molly, finishing 8th in her age group. Another surprise was Mae Thompson’s run who, considering that she’s a sprinter, finished 17th in the Inters’ rankings. And considering that she’s just training with as for a few months, Inter Olivia Njae’s run to 45th place was remarkable, too. Another “well done” for the girls.
Our lads did well, too. The problem is – there are too few, and too many are plagued by injuries. Household names were missing, not least George Corcoran who so comprehensively had won the Boroughs’. Never mind… Joe Malett, having overcome his calf problems, had a very fine run to 38th place in the Junior (year 8/9) age group. Nick Hart finished 58th, having to slot in an extra stop 5 meters before the finish when his breakfast insisted on an independent form of existence… Sam Vassall in the Inters race finished 45th, contributing to the Kingston team coming 3rd. Well done to you all.
… Curious how it went on???
Well… those who made it into the top 20 were selected for the Intercounties at Prospect Park 11th February. And here, Layla came 27th and Mae 66th in the Inter’s race, and they contributed to Surrey winning the Intercounties in this age group. In the Senior’s race Francesca came 49th (Molly didn’t run); Surrey came 3rd. A really fantastic achievement!
I hope you all feel inspired.
Training IS working, if you put the work in, and if you are patient when you are growing and your body changes into its more adult form.
Keep on running!
