Susanne's Final Round-Up
Great turn-out, great performances, 3rd in the U11s, and 2nd in the U13 and U15 team events.
When we assembled on the Epsom Downs for the final match on Sunday 6th March, expectations were high. With 1 point behind the leaders in the U11s’, solid 2nd-placed in the U13s’ and 3 points behind the leaders in the U15s’ category, we hoped we would walk away with the odd trophy. Moreover, we had quite a good number of runners supporting the team. However, many runners from previous races were absent, many of this time’s runners were new and had to get used to the course, and many were 1st year in their respective age groups. So in the end, we had to settle for 3rd place in the U11 age group, and 2nd place in the U13 and U15 age groups. But this just means that we have to be patient and mount a stronger challenge next year. It should be added that, looking at the racing times, the most consistent as well as most improved athletes were those who put effort into regular training – so training really does pay off!
In the U11s group we had lost Gregor Hooke to the Schools’ National Rugby finals, and it fell to Darcy Bourne to bring the team home in 13th place (2nd girl, 12.48 min for the 2km course). A fantastic run crowned with a new PB saw Sasha Reed finish in 14th place 3rd girl, 12.49), followed suit by Finlay Hardwick in 15th place (12.53). Mollie O’Sullivan finished 18th (4th girl. 13.00), followed by novice Alexander Line (19th, 13.06). The next group of K&P runners came home 28th (Kathryn Bartle, 10th girl, 13.55), 29th (Harry De Rosa, 13.56), 32nd (Harry Schwarz, 14.12), 34th (novice Ben Paton, 14.18), 35th (novice Olli Chen, 14.19), 37th (Sophia Free, 11th girl, 14.25), 38th (Rebecca Keddie, 12th girl, new PB in 14.26) and 39th (Stephen Hart, 14.27). George Chaplin (45th, 15.04), Mollie Davies (48th, 15.10), Eleanor Bartle (50th, 15.33) and Lauren Hilton (54th, 15.55), closed the score for us. Given that with 70 runners, this was the stampede of the season, our athletes did very well indeed. However, we still slipped into 3rd place overall, 38 points behind Epsom & Ewell and 15 points behind Sutton & District. Nevertheless, Darcy took home the trophy for best girl in all three matches, Mollie O’Sullivan was ranked 2nd, and Sasha joined 3rd- well done!
Our U13s were brought home in 1st place by a superb Neil Wellard. He finished the 2.5km U13 course in a new PB of 12.13, the best time since I started my recordings, and he ended the season in 2nd place . Joe Lavender also had a new PB (13.49) and finished 7th. With Elle Butcher injured and Nadia Allan ill, Laura Darcey was our 1st girl home in 11th place (14.32), and she finished the season ranked 2nd . Novice Jordan Welby came 12th (14.34), Oliver Phelps 18th (15.07), Patrick Comerford 19th (15.23), novice Markus Syyrilä 20th (16.07- watch out, big bro…), also new to the scene Josh Burrows 21st (16.54), Frances Rennie 23rd (17.18) and novice Ben Sankey 24th (18.57); Rowena Duncan DNF. The team finished a solid 2nd place on the day and 2nd place overall, 43 points behind Sutton & District and 57 points ahead of 3rd-placed Epsom & Ewell.
Finally, also our U15s took 2nd place, a mere 17 points behind the winners Croydon and 78 points ahead of Holland Sports. Phil Bearman had a very nice run to 3rd place (12.14, 2nd overall), Joe Malett finished 4th (12.41, 3rd overall), Jenny Miles, back after long absence came 10th (3rd girl, 13.48), followed by Nick Hart (11th, 14.11), Ella Shaw (12th/ 4th girl, 2nd ranked overall, 14.02), Bridget Langford (14th/5th girl, 14.48), Laura Cook (15th/ 6th girl, 14.57), Matthew Stevens (17th, 15.25), Matthew Broderick (18th, 15.30), Olivia Njae (19th/ 7th girl, 15.58) and Alex Bartle (20th/ 8th girl, 16.27). Well done as well.
