Top start from the NYAL- Full results on TOPS,TPOT and NYAL sites.

Great start to the NYAL season

A tremendous turnout, marvellous team spirit and some superb performances gave us the well-deserved result: top place in the first NYAL match over St. Mary’s Richmond and Ealing Southall & Middlesex. Throughout the match we had been neck-on-neck with St. Mary’s. Over the second half we seemed to have accumulated a sufficient cushion of points, when first injuries and then a disqualification and one of our teams missing the start in the relays made the outcome somewhat more exciting than we had hoped for. In the end we held on to a great win, but we relied on every single athlete coming out to represent the Club, and every event they covered. The final score:

Kingston AC & Polytechnic H 521

St. Mary’s Richmond               510

Ealing Southall & Middlesex   430

The win was even more remarkable considering that we had a large number of newcomers in the team, who all achieved great results in their events. Remarkably, our athletes scored 1st and 2nd places across all disciplines: sprints, middle distance, jumps and throws. Some of the many highlights were outstanding wins by Aidan Fahey in the 200m, Ellé Butcher and Harry Reynolds in the 800m, Phillip Bearman in the 1500m, and Jody Edwards in the Shot. Nina Gibbins (HJ), Alex Bartle (HT), Harry Morgan (LJ), Phillip Bearman (1500m), Aidan Fahey (200m) and Kiran Richards (SP, DT) reached grade 4 in their events, Jody Edwards (SP), Nina Gibbins (75m, 150m), and Ellé Butcher even achieved grade 3. The ‘Athlete of the Match’ awards go to Nina Gibbins for 3 wins including 2 grade 3 results, and to Kiran Richards for 3 wins including 2 grade 4 performances. Special praise for Harry Robinson, Charlie Townend and Vanessa Saunders who stepped in to fill vacant events at the last minute to score important points for the team.

Thanks to all our athletes (not least those who made themselves available but were not selected for this match) and their parents, and special thanks to all our helpers in the background who helped with the team management, driving the minibus, our officiating duties (contributing 60 points to the score!), and the smooth running of the match: David Barrington Jonathon Bartle, Sheila Brackpoole, Gill Broderick, Susanne Dietrich, Mary Dimbleby, Brenda Ford, Maurice Joyce, Pat Logan, Peter Shilling, Sue Shilling, and Don Turner.

The result should be an inspiration for our athletes to come out again in two weeks for the next match (22 May at Kingsmeadow against Woking and Camberley), and for others (particularly more U17 girls!) to join in.
