Veterans League 2011 Match 1 – Mens’ team

Kingsmeadow 9th May

A very encouraging start to the season for the K&P men. We came 2nd, although it’s fairly tight between 2nd and 4th. The match was more notable for debuts than individual wins, with Rob Lowe ( 1st M40 Hammer/2nd M35 Shot) and Maurice Joyce (1st M60 High Jump/2nd M60 Shot) being our best placed performers. We must have gathered a lot of 2nd and 3rd places to make get our overall result.

In the M35s Mark Reed made his debut as a veteran/master in the 1500m in 4.53.4 only 6 weeks after a foot operation, and Andrew Gordon made his debut on the anchor leg of our 4 x 100 team. Meanwhile in the M50s Bill Trimble followed his son (William) and his wife (Joan) into athletics, scoring for us in the Shot, and doing a non-scoring Hammer, and new member Tony Schwarz returning to athletics after two decades jumped 4.25m to come second in the Long Jump, and did a non-scoring 100m.

We also had second places from David Bell in the M35 2000m Walk, Chuck Isetts in the M60 100m, and Ollie Oladele in the M40 100m (although because of a mix up over the false start rule for veterans/masters he crossed the line first, but someone incorrectly disqualified from his race re-ran in a later race in a faster time).

Next match is at Ewell on 23rd May, when the Men have 200m, 800m, 3000m, 4 x 400m relay on the track, Javelin, Pole Vault, Shot and Triple Jump in the field.

And the Women's Team Report from TM Nicky Atkins

The women also finished in 2nd place, 131 points, to Epsom & Ewell (167 points) in the first meeting which was a home match.

During this match we had wins from Nicki Murphy (wv50) competing as a w35 B (14.9secs)100m and 400m (74.2secs).  Nicki also came in first place in the wv50 both in the high and triple jump (1.20m, 8.38m).  Joan Trimble came 1st place in the 100m wv50 (14.6) beating her rival by 0.2 seconds. Dina Francis returning from injury won the wv50 400m race in 77.4 seconds. Straight after running the 100m sprint (15.2 secs),Susanne  Dietrich won the women’s 2000m (12.12.7 min) walk which was swiftly followed,at short notice, by the 400m (76.3ses). Both Rachel Disley (A) and Nicky Atkins (B) finished in 2nd place positions in the 1500m.    Caroline Jeffcote turned her hand (or feet) from road running to track as a non-scorer in her debut appearance in the Southern Veterans League and achieved PB’s both in the 100m 23.5 secs and 400m 108.1 secs – well done!

Out on the field we had first place wins from Camilla Thrush in the discus 31.18 meters and hammer 37.05 meters. Second place came from Debbie Singleton wv50 (Walton) in the discus 21.06 meters and hammer 27.42meters. Camilla jumped 1.20 meters in the high jump, which is not her event, claiming 2nd place.

The 100m relay which ran with the men was a tough event. The women finished 2nd (64.5 secs) to Epsom & Ewell (60.1). K&P’s relay team were: Rachel Disley, Nicki Murphy, Susanne Dietrich and Joan Trimble.

Gill Broderick who was unable to compete because of injury helped to officiate. Thank you.

Thank you to everyone who officiated, competed and supported this event. The next meeting will be on Monday 23rd at Ewell Court.
