The TM's review of a tougher match at Uxbridge in none too pleasant weather.

Good score against strong competition

After consecutive wins in the first two matches, school exams took their toll on our team for the third UK Young Athletes League match in Hillingdon (don’t the kids in the other teams go to school?). Severely reduced particularly in the U13 Boys and U17 Girls groups, we were facing a very difficult match competing against two of the strongest teams in our division. Hillingdon made full use of their home advantage and won the match by a huge margin. It was much closer between us and Wycombe, but in the end the many points missed because of absent athletes made the difference. Still, with great dedication and many superb performances our hard core team assembled a very respectable point score that keeps us midfield in the League table. The final score:

Hillingdon 608

Wycombe Phoenix 496

Kingston AC & Polytechnic H 445

Three wins with excellent performances (AAA grade 2 in 800m and grade 3 in LJ) earn Ellé Butcher the female ‘Athlete of the Match’ award, while the male counterpart goes to Aidan Fahey (grade 2 in 100m, grade 3 in 200m). Theirs were not the only noticeable results: 34 first and second places in the just 61 events that we contested showed that we have the quality to compete with the best in our Division. Moreover, our athletes achieved nearly 50 PB’s and quite a few more graded performances: grade 4 by Laura Darcey (75H), Nadia Allan (800m), Lauren Edwards (100m, HJ), Nina Gibbins (150m), Holly Beighton (LJ), Caitlin Dimbleby (PV), Ellie Manhire (SP), Kiran Richards (DT, SP), and grade 3 by Nina Gibbins (75m), Phillip Bearman (1500m), Tuomas Syyrilä (HJ), Nicole Kendall (TJ). We have plenty to cheer about, from top places in many of the middle distance races and field events to a great win by our U17 Boys’ 4x100m relay (just outside the Club record) that completed the picture of a successful day regardless of the overall point score. Well done to all our athletes!

One match to go in the League this year, 19 June at Watford against Thames Valley Harriers and League leaders Chiltern. This is the last chance to compete in the NYAL this year. School exams will be mostly over, so hopefully we will get a good turnout.
