The Chair's Report on another success!

Rosenheim League Final
Kingsmeadow, August 10th 2011

Kingston & Poly’s Men triumphed in a tough final, after a tit-for-tat duel with a strong Herne Hill Harriers team, which kept the result in doubt until the very last event. Last year’s champions, Belgrave, were surprisingly weak, leaving Hercules Wimbledon to take 3rd place. As usual, the other qualifying clubs from our Western Division of the league struggled against their more illustrious Eastern rivals, which makes K&P’s victory all the more laudable and satisfying.

The tension and spirit of the night were encapsulated by the first track event, the 110 Hurdles, where Thomas Ashby (HHH) was judged to have narrowly beaten K&P’s Matt Field, despite the clock not showing a hundredth of a second between them, both finishing in an excellent 14.90s. Matt, our premier all-round hurdler, was disappointed not to take advantage of his excellent shape and post an overdue sub-14.70s pb, but it is to be hoped that he’ll sacrifice personal ambition for BAL team points on Saturday, where a 400H/110H double may beckon!

In the field, co-captain Gareth Cook also had to give best to Herne Hill, despite an excellent Hammer Throw of 52.15m, but Gordon Lester provided our first victory, in the Pole Vault (4.20m), where HHH could only manage 4th. Back on the track, Craig Price produced an identical result - winning a strong, front-run 800m and opening up a gap on Herne Hill.

Despite fighting hard, our sprinters offered a ray of hope to the opposition once again, with Justin Green (100m) and Chris Hall (200m) unable to tap into their best form and finishing 2nd and 3rd respectively. In the 400m, Jamie McCullagh, who has struggled with a toe injury, also found the going tough and finished 4th in a quick race.

Things were starting to slip away from us, but our Middle Distance athletes led the fight-back, with great tactical wins for the excellent Tom Beedell (1500m) and quality newcomer, Gordon Pearce (3K). The rally was consolidated in the field, where Chris Hall comfortably won the Long Jump (6.57m) and Andy Wheble kept up his consistent good form for 2nd in the Discus (42.21m), where once again HHH were the victors.

This meant that we had our noses just in front of Herne Hill for the final event – the 4x200m relay. In a repeat of a previous glorious Rosenheim Final night at Kingsmeadow, HHH cracked under the pressure and were disqualified for a false start, leaving the path to victory clear for our squad of Andre Nembhard, Victor Nwagbara, Chris Hall, and Justin Green. Congratulations to triumphant team manager, Humphrey Waddington and to David Barrington who “minded the shop” and set the Men off on the right track when Humphrey was away at university, earlier in the season.

Due to the disqualification, our victory margin looks a lot more comfortable than it felt on the night -  K&P 87pts, HHH 76, Hercules 62, Croydon 50,Belgrave 49, St Mary’s 29, BA 14, and Walton 9. It was a great feeling to win again after two previous top 3 finishes, now let’s continue that fight into our BAL match on Saturday and take another big step towards clinching promotion!
