Matt's words on our opening Club CC Championship Day

Last Saturday (1st October) saw Kingston and Poly’s annual 5 mile race at Sheen Gate in Richmond Park. Normally this match is played out in Autumnal dark and rainy weather, but this year it was a swelteringly hot day - indeed, everyone did quite well just to make it round!

This race is always pretty quick, and, despite the weather, this particular match was no exception. Standout performances came from Matthew Jones (Thames Hare and Hounds) and also Nic Gould (THH) who took first and second places respectively. Both completed the course in less than 30 minutes (27:26, 27:46). Also impressive was Craig Price, first in for K&P in 29:09, and winning the Bert Long trophy. K&P’s Andy Arbour in 4th place was the only other runner to finish within the half hour, in 29:55.

There were plenty of other good performances. Notable was Phil Bearman senior’s run (8th), which earned him the K&P Veteran’s George Harrup trophy. Oliver Horrocks (17th) produced a fine run to win the U20 Alec Addis trophy.

All in all, 27 took part. It was great to see a strong turnout from Thames Hare and Hounds, together with representation from Hercules Wimbledon too.

Next up is the first Surrey League match, also at Richmond Park(Kingston Gate) on 8th October. A good turnout for this opener is vital so please pop this match in your diaries.
