id1331-Downs League M1 Epsom Downs November 6th 2011 Report

Written by SD

TM Susanne's review of a successful first morning of the winter season for K&P,on a relatively benign Epsom Downs

Grand opener for the K&P young athletes’ Downs League cross country season.

Looking at the pictures, our U11 team consisting of Gregor Hooke, Finlay Hardwick, Sami Allan, Harry Schwarz, Blaize Lee-Blackwood and Aidan Lorde (boys) and Darcy Bourne, Sasha Reed, Kathryn Bartle, Eleanor McDonnell, Eleanor Bartle, Hannah Roberts (girls) had won the fun-team-of-the-day-award well before the race. They kept the party going and - won the match. A superb Gregor brought the team home in 3rd place; our next scorers were Fin (7th), Darcy (9th/2nd girl) and Sasha (15th/3rd girl). It should be praised that all “newcomers” had very solid runs round the course and hence, achieved what they set out to achieve. And those who knew the 2km course from last season improved significantly on their times; the crown for the most improved athlete goes to Kathryn Bartle who improved by 46 seconds. So our U11s really accomplished their mission!

(Also in the U11 race,Club member Sam Shaw, representing his school,Hinchley Wood, for whom Gill Broderick is TM,placed 2nd overall. Ed)

Our U13s (Harry Reynolds, Mollie O’Sullivan, Sam Woolhouse, Cameron Brown, George Chaplin, Rebecca Keddie, Rhianna Reynolds) could have done with a bit more support from their fellow club mates. Moreover, all were novices on the longer (2,5km) U13 course. However, they worked incredibly hard and brought the team home in 3rd place. And we all felt elated when Harry finished first, well ahead of the next runner, and in a record time of 11:50 min. Mollie was our 1st girl home (5th girl overall).

Our U15s (Philip Bearman, Neil Wellard, Nick Hart, Ellé Butcher, Nadia Allan, Ella Shaw, Joe Lavender, Bridget Langford, Laura Darcey, Oliver Phelps, Josh Pearson, Marcus Lorde, Marlie Carter-Edwards, Daniel Robertson, Frances Rennie) had come out with some force and that paid off. Phil brought the team home in fantastic 11.12 min and 2nd place, followed by Neil (5th), Nick (11th) and Ellé (15th/ 4th girl). With everybody giving their best, the team finished 2nd. Those who knew the course pushed for new PBs, with the reward for the most improved athlete this time going to Nick Hart (improved by 51 sec). All in all a very satisfying start to the season.

A big “thank you” to all who came to run, to all the families who enthusiastically supported our athletes and to all the K&P members who were out at dawn to set up the course, marshal and time-keep. Well done to all. Full results are on our website at http://www.kingstonandpoly.org/.

What’s next?

Quite a few will have been asked to represent their schools at the upcoming Borough or District XC races (the Kingston race is on Tuesday 15th November). If not, talk to your school sports coordinators to make sure you are being entered – this race selects for the upcoming County School’s Champs, and it is quite an honour to represent your Borough or District.

The next Surrey XC league races for older athletes (U13/15/17 and seniors) will be on 12th November (men) and 3rd December (women), Sportshall match No2 follows on 27th November, and we will be back on the Epsom Downs for the next Downs League match on 4th December.

Enjoy your running

Yours
