Debbie Raymond's first hand view of the day's proceedings over Ranelagh's course
Our second Surrey Ladies Cross Country League was held 3rd December in Richmond Park hosted by Ranelagh. A bright beautiful morning after a night of some rain left reasonably soft conditions and attracted 366 senior athletes. A scramble for a place to run after attempting to find a place to park always makes an interesting occasion!
Our team started with 11 athletes which must be a record and is very encouraging. First K&P home was myself in 43rd (26:13) with our next 3 athletes one after the other. Jenny Miles, running in her first senior race although an u17, 54th (26:57), Nicky Atkins, 55th (27:02) Gaby Miles an u20 in 56th (27:06) and Liz Richardson, still fighting a virus 59th (27:30). These 5 made up the 'A' team which finished 8th.
Natalie Sacre was first home in the 'B' team 69th (28:08) with Nicki Murphy 72nd (28:15), Max Lavin 83rd (29:06), Johanna Gibbons 98th (30:13) and Caroline Jeffcote 133rd (34:21). They were the 4th 'B' team to finish. This shows that although we do not have any exceptional 'up-front' runners we are very solid and together which must help us all. Sadly Rosaline Darby had a trip and did not finish the race but ended up in A&E and we wish her well with her recovery.
Overall we are now in 10th place with 497 points. Elmbridge are in 9th with 484 and Sutton Runners 8th with 477 points. However, we are some way away from 11th which is Dulwich Park Runners with 618points!
Once again the juniors were on the very small side with no u13s. Sadly, the next day was the Downs League which attracts some but not all. We had 3 athletes in the combined u15/u17 race and they all ran very, very well. Layla Thompson was 3rd u17 (18:27) while sister Mae was 4th (18:38) of just 6 runners. Both were fine runs before they compete next Saturday at the Inter Counties in the lovely Lloyd Park - we wish them well. Nadia Allan was our sole u15 representative in her first year of being an u15. Her words "It was a hard course but interesting". Nadia finished a fantastic 12th in 19:19 round the course.
Our next Surrey League race is on January 14th on Farthing Downs in Coulsdon. For those who want to burn off some mince pies we will be meeting at Denbies Vineyard on the 7th for the Surrey Championships race. Let me know before Christmas if you want to be entered please. Hope you all have a peaceful & restful Christmas and return fit and well in the New Year x
