Another good morning on the Downs - Full results on this site.

Downs League Match 2 on Sunday 4th December 2011:

Emphatic wins for U13 Harry Reynolds and U15 Phil Bearman –

But it’s the U11s who are truly unstoppable!

With temperatures dropping, a shivering crowd collected around the K&P sail flags to contest the 2nd of the 4 Downs League XC matches. But the U11s got into full swing quickly. Gregor Hooke led the team home in 2nd place, just ahead of Sam Shaw (who was running for the Hinchley Wood School team). The two are now joined 2nd in the overall rankings. Next for our team were Ben Paton coming in 5th, Finlay Hardwick 7th and Sasha Reed 12th (2nd girl on the day, and 2nd overall). Freya Gladstone had a superb debut finishing 17th (4th girl), closely followed by Kathryn Bartle (18th/ 5th girl) and Annabel Hobday (22nd /7th girl, also running for Hinchley Wood). A sharp finish saw Eleanor Bartle (30th/ 9th girl) in front of Eleanor McDonnell (32nd/ 11th girl), Hannah Roberts finished 39th and with a fine 1st outing, new runner Guy Francis came 42nd. Our runners significantly improved compared to last time, and most literally smashed their previous PBs. The team won the match quite decisively with 40 points ahead of Hinchley Wood School. Overall, we are ahead by 65 points, and are in a very strong position to win the League. Yes, we shouldn’t celebrate too early; yes, there is still work to do. But it’s looking very good indeed.

In the U13 age group, Harry Reynolds, once again, was the class act. He won the race miles ahead of everybody else, and is the undisputed leader of the boy’s rankings. Mollie O’Sullivan was the next to finish for us in 13th place (4th girl). She was closely followed by Gian Hobbs (15th), Rebecca Keddie (16th/8th girl), George Chaplin (19th), Rhianna Reynolds (21st/12th girl) and Harry De Rosa (23rd). Unfortunately, the team was beaten to 3rd place by mere 10 points. Overall, we are in 3rd place, uncomfortably close though to the 4th placed “B”-team from Epsom and Ewell. Yet, the fact that Harry and George equalled and Mollie, Rebecca and Rhianna improved their PBs shows that the team is growing in strength. We need more runners to come out, so U13s - give it a go!

K&P was able to celebrate another sweet win when Phil Bearman took the lead in the U15 race as well as the overall rankings. Neil Wellard came home 6th, Nick Hart 10th, both with new PBs, and then in close succession Elle Butcher 15th (4th girl), Joe Lavender 16th, Ella Shaw 17 (5th girl), Bridget Langford 18 (6th girl), Laura Darcey 20th (8th girl) and Oli Phelps 22nd. Although equal on points with the 2nd team, we had to settle for 3rd place on back count. Overall, we are clinging on to 2nd place, 16 points behind Croydon and a single point ahead of Sutton – it’s still all to play for!

So… As a TM I hope you’ll stay healthy and fit for the remaining two matches coming up in the New Year. Before that, we’ll have the Surrey’s coming up on Saturday 7th January 2012. Winter-born school year 6 athletes and U13, U15, U17 can run. We can field strong teams if you all come out! Let me know as soon as possible whether you want to do this race; I need to enter you before Christmas.

This leave me to say a 1000 thanks to our athletes, families, friends, helpers and supporters – you make it joy for me to manage the team.

Have a lovely festive season, and best wishes
