Susanne's report on a good day for K&P athletes
Surrey Schools XC Champs 2012 – K&P athletes display talent and bravery
The Surrey Schools XC Champs 2012 were graced by the appearance of inspirational, newly crowned European U23 XC Champion Emilia Gorecka who, of course, won the Senior Girls’ race. However, our K&P athletes don’t have to hide: top 20 performances for Y7 Mollie O’ Sullivan (17th), Juniors (Y8+9) Ellé Butcher (18th) and Neil Wellard (19th), and Inter (y10+11) Phil Bearman (20th). A number of our athletes were not quite well, with Nikolaj winning the sickness contest by parting from his lunch half an hour before the race and Freya falling ill in the U11 race. However, all gave their best and produced very competitive runs. Y7 Rebecca Keddie came 40th and Alex Shaw 50th in the 151 strong Y7 girls’ field, sprinter/jumper Holly Beighton finished 77th in the 83 strong Junior girls’ race, Mae Thompson was 23rd, Bridget Langford 31st, Layla Thompson 43rd and Ella Shaw 44th of 69 Inter girls, Sam Vassall 52nd of the Inter boys and Nikolaj Schubert 40th of the Senior boys.
Yet, once again our U11s stole the show: Darcy Bourne came 2nd, Pippa Earley 3rd, Sasha Reed 6th, Kathryn Bartle 39th, Eleanor Bartle 61st and Hannah Roberts 101st of 151 primary school girls. In the equally crowded boys’ race, Finlay Hardwick bravely sprinted after the runners as he had been delayed in traffic and still came 80th, Ben Paton came 34th and Sam Shaw won the gold medal and the Boy's Andy Glover Award for Emerging Talents. Darcy, Pippa, Sasha and Sam are now qualified to run for Surrey Under 13s in the Southern Counties Schools Inter County on 24th March in Kent(venue TBA).
Congratulation to all our athletes – it takes talent, hard work in training and the will power to achieve what you have achieved, and you’ve got all that. Be proud!
And many thanks to our athletic parents for their support from organising the warm up of the athletes to defending the tent against gusty winds.
I very much hope you are hungry for more, such as the
