TM Gill Broderick reports on a useful start to the new campaign in Div One
EBBISHAM LEAGUE – Match 1 – Sutton Arena – 15th by Gill Broderick
A confident start to the summer season, depite there being a biting, cold wind to finish in 4th place in the Div 1 league. We missed out on 9 events scores, through being unable to fulfil a complete team in some events, but nonetheless the boys showed good spirit and a willingness to try something new regardless of their ability or confidence. Without this attitude, we would have not finished 4th.
The team results: Herne Hill 210
South London 87.5
U13 Team: Blaize Lee-Blackwood, Ben Paton, Finlay Hardwick, Tom May, James Hinton
U15 Team: Souleyman Bah, Alex Parkinson, Nick Osman, Peter Betts, Harry Reynolds, Marlon Fossey, Neil Wellard.
Worth a mention are the performances of Ben and Finlay in the 1500m. Entering their first year in this age group, they ran respectable times of 5.38.1 and 5.49.3. They have set the benchmark for this event. Tom was on his first outing for K&P and tentatively threw the javelin after having some knowledge of this from Kestrels. All the U13 covered three events and in the 4 x 200 team of Ben, Blaize, Finlay and James - 3rd in a time of 2.17.4. I was proud of what they achieved and I think that they should be too.
In the U15s, Harry jumped to a PB in the high jump (although he is synonymous with cross country and 1500m) finding the lift and spring to clear 1.35m. Alex, in the A string, while clearing and matching his PB in the top height of 1.50m finished 3rd on countback, but shows promise for the future years ahead after only joining us at the start of the winter season. Well done to Peter, a fairly new member, who experienced his first competitive 800m, 200m and, fantastically, didn’t flinch when asked to throw the javelin.
Marlon, our only competitor in the 80m hurdles, ran with the best technique to come 3rd in 14.2 and threw the javelin for a creditable 18.21m on his first outing. Souleyman and Alex teamed up well in the triple jump, an event neither of them were sure about, but showed a willingness and commitment to try anything for the club name. Neil ran a PB in the 800m in 2.23.3 so he was a happy athlete! He finished the day as our solitary 400m runner - and when the heavens opened. In the 4 x 200m relay, the team of Marlon, Nick, Alex and Souleyman recorded a sound 1.52.6. It was good to have Nick back after a year of injuries.
Thank you to Hugh McCann, David Barrington, Maurice Joyce, Sean Paton, Mark Reynolds, Susanne Dietrich and Frank Schubert for officiating in the track, shot and discus.
Final thank you to all the boys and parents who turned out to cheer and support.
