K&P on course to win the YAL division

The second match in this year’s Young Athletes League proved to be a real thriller, pitching us as division leaders against 2nd placed Thames Valley Harriers on their home ground. Exams, DoE expeditions and injuries had taken their toll, reducing our team by more than a 1/3. Yet, quality and the willingness to fill in for the missing athletes made up for the shortages. Certainly a highlight were the terrific wins by Mollie O’Sullivan, Ellé Butcher, Neil Wellard and Phoebe Law in the middle distance races. Surprisingly we were even ahead for the first half of the match, before a TVH surge got them into the lead. Still, 56 1st and 2nd places, nearly the same number as in our home match, kept us in contention right to the end of the match which culminated in the exhilarating relays. Pippa Earley embodied our spirit when she, despite a heavy fall in an earlier race, ran a fantastic 2nd leg to set up an unexpected win for our U13 girls. This was followed by further top spots for our U15 boys 4x100m and U17 boys 4x400 teams, but in the end TVH just held on.

This result has set up a real finale between TVH and us for the last match on 17 June in Aldershot – whoever wins it will also win the Southern 1 SWN division. With a repeat of the 70+ turnout of the home match we have every chance to top the league.
