Camilla Thrush brings news of our Disabled members in the build-up to the Paralympics
K&P Open 14th and 15th April 2012
The K&P Open was another success raising nearly £400 for the club. The competition was a success for many K&P Athletes starting with Pippa Wingate breaking her Hammer record with a throw of 49.85 well on her way to her 50m target. She then followed this up with a 35.95 discus and 10.57 shot so a good start to the season. Pippa was accompanied by Alex Bartle in the hammer who threw 29.40 another good opening after a good winters training. In the men’s throws Mikael Undrom threw 7.45 in the shot and Rory McCann and Harry Robinson threw well in the Javelin.
The Open was also a first opportunity for our new seated throwers to see some good throwing by UK number one Derek Derenalagi who threw 43.30 in the discus. Toby Gold and Tony West got their first seated discus throws competition underway with 10.81 and 14.41 respectively. K&P was well represented on the track with PB’s coming thick and fast for all our athletes including Toby, Jack Binstead, James Freeman and Sheikh Sheikh.
Once again the meeting was well supported by athletes from all over the UK and included a World and European record by Scott Thor Jones in the discus and shot.
London Marathon 26th April 2012
This years London Marathon got off to a good start with the mini-marathon being won in a course equal record time by Sheikh Sheikh(12:30), he was followed home in third place by Jack Binstead (13.38) who also posted a PB for the distance. James Freeman finished in 23: 43 knocking nearly 6mins off his time last year. Toby also posted a respectable 21mins 23 sec for his first outing in this event.
The highlight of the day was David Weir coming home first in 1hour 32min 26sec to win his 6th London Marathon equalling Dame Tammy Greys record.
It was a very good day for Coach of the year Jenny Archer with athletes that she coaches coming home 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 5th in the mini marathon and David wining the main event.
Olympic Park Disability Test Event 8th May 2012
This was a chance for a number of K&P athletes to see and compete in the Olympic Park Stadium, Sheikh Sheikh posted a new PB in the 100m and made it through to the final, Jack also posted PB’s in the 100m and 1500m. The highlight of the day was David 1500m race coming home in 2:58.46 just 3 seconds outside the world record.
Swiss Championships 19th & 20th May 2012
This is the main international event outside the Paralympics for K&P athletes looking for quick times in the lead up to the Games. Its s chance for our athletes to compete against the top athletes from all over the world and resulted in yet more PB’s for Jack (100m 17.78; 200m 32.43; 400m 62.63) , Sheikh (100m 15.69; 200m 27.77; 400m 54.48) and Jenny’s other two athletes she coaches including Will Smith knocking 10 secs off his 1500m time. David also did well recovering from a major crash on the Thursday before the weekend competition winning the 10K and posting another good time in he 1500m 2:56.49.
