Terrific away win seals YAL division title for K&P

We headed into the final match of the UK Young Athletes League as division leaders, but with Thames Valley Harriers hot on our heels. Our hopes looked seriously dented when all of our U17 male sprinters failed to show up, while TVH had assembled a very strong team. Yet, the other team members filled events wherever possible and luckily all other age groups had a strong presence. Like in the previous matches we got into the lead early, but for the rest of the match (and thereafter) were completely in the dark about the point score. Some spectacular performances on the track and in the field boosted the team morale and our athletes kept competing well out of their comfort zone, resulting in a much clearer win than ever expected.

We had an amazing 55 athletes making their way to the Hampshire wilderness. It was well worth the effort, not only for the match win, but also individually for the 58 PBs and a large number of AAA graded results: Grade 4’s from Laura Darcey (75H), Neil Wellard (800m), Amy Richardson (150m), Nadia Allan (1500m), Joanna Lennon (HT), Charlie Townend (HJ), Jody Edwards (DT, SP), Matthew Broderick (TJ), Ellie Manhire (JT), Maz Hemici (SP), grade 3’s from Ellé Butcher (800m), Amy Richardson (75m), Alex Bartle (HT), Ellie Manhire (SP), Laura Darcey (HJ), and a grade 2 high jump from Rhianna Reynolds to lead the Surrey rankings. Arguably the top result of the day was Amy Richardson’s grade 1 new Club record in the long jump.

Thanks to assistant team manager Mary Dimbleby, our driver and time keeper Maurice Joyce, track judge David Barrington and our field official team of Gill Broderick, Helen and Jon Cook, Susanne Dietrich, Bronwen Fitzpatrick, Pat Logan, Hugh McCann, Sean Paton, and Mark Reynolds.

Our success in the match and the division marks the end of a fantastic season in the Young Athletes League, the best that I have experienced as team manager for team spirit, performance and support from parents. Sadly this season is also the end of the YAL as such. UKA (our governing body) in their questionable wisdom are planning to break up the YAL and replace it with a new league structure, which will have separate competitions for the U13/U15 and U17/U20 age groups. This means that we won’t know about promotion to the top division until July at the earliest.
