Valiant efforts to grab two 2nd places - the Men nearly took E&E on their own patch!

WOMEN

The women’s team are still suffering from casualties with Nicki Murphy, Dina Francis, Susanne Dietrich, Rosalind Darby and Rachel Disley all unable to compete due to injuries. However we welcome the return of Jo Regan (Walton), Joan Trimble, Camilla Thrush and Debbie Singleton (Walton) from illness and injuries.

The meeting was held at Epsom’s & Ewell’s home ground in Ewell.  Jo Regan, Clare Nelson, Joan Trimble, Caroline Jeffcote and myself took care of the track events with Joan Trimble winning her race in the over 50 age group and both Jo Regan and Clare Nelson both achieved 2nd place. This was Clare’s debut 200m race for the vets league; she was actually hoping to race as non-scorer but proved to be very useful for earning the team 7 points. Caroline and me took care of the two longer distance races (800m & 3000m) which were less than 20 minutes apart.

Out on the field Clare Nelson vaulted while Jo Regan jumped in the long jump. Camilla and Debbie Singleton earned 31 points between them in the discus and hammer throw while Odette McHenry had to settle for non-scoring but achieved a pleasing distance.

Unfortunately we couldn’t enter the team in the 4 x 400m relay as there weren’t enough of us but the good news is that we still managed to retain a comfortable 2nd place to Epsom & Ewell Harriers – well done team!

Our next match will be on Monday 25th June at Kingsmeadow which is a home match. Officials and help are required for this match.

MEN

Swings and Roundabouts

After our incredibly tight 4th place at Tooting, the match at Ewell saw another close result where we nearly caught Epsom & Ewell coming second in the match by 3 points. We are now second in the division, on the same league points as Striders, but ahead on cumulative match points. Team management is an art not a science. We managed to field an almost complete field only being short in the M60 Pole Vault, but in retrospect some of my slot filling could have been better. You try to balance using  the best athletes with inclusion of consistent supporters who may be not so good, and not burning out the best athletes in one match, and then you have to trust to luck. One athlete may no height in a vertical jump but a point gatherer may come second in another event.

Turning to names, Andy Robinson made his league debut coming 1st in the 3000m, and 3rd in the 800m and then anchoring our 4 x 400 team (led off by Chris Taplin to Phil Bearman to Draco Mkpa) to a good 2nd place against a strong Hercules Wimbledon team. We also welcomed back Dave Nourse to the club, He came 2nd in the M60 Shot and 2nd in the M50 Hammer (as there was no M60 Hammer this match). We had wins from Draco M40 200m,Chris Taplin M40 800, Chuck Isetts M60 200 (although he has just entered the M70s last week!) and Rob Lowe in the M40 Hammer (2nd in M35 Shot as well). Andy Gordon got 2nd in the scoring M35 200m, as did Robin Shaw in the M40 Pole Vault (He also scored for us in the triple jump after a recently turned ankle prevented Stuart Channon doing the event). Other members of the team were Jack Rutherford 800m, Jon Cook 3000m, David Greenfield 3000m, Mike May M50 200m, Geoff Reed M60 3000m, and Frank Schubert M50 Shot, Triple Jump and Pole Vault, and thanks to David Barrington and Cashel Riordan for anchoring our Field Judge team for the men's and women's Hammer.
