ROSENHEIM – Eton, 4th July

by Peter Waddington

Both our Men's and Women's teams continued their winning ways at Eton. With one match to go, the Men have pretty much won the Western Division, but still have a big prize to go for. If they can win the final match at Woking, they will have gone another season unbeaten, which would be a major achievement that every K&P competitor can be justly proud of. The Women are also continuing their surge for glory, and a victory at Woking would also ensure a successful defence of their championship.

The Women made the long trek to Berkshire with what looked like their biggest team yet, but still left 400m, 800m and 3K uncontested. Wins for Emily McIlwain (HJ), Nicole Kendall (TJ) and  Nicky Atkins (1500m) laid a strong foundation for victory. They were ably supported by Laura Cook (100H), Rahannah Gillette-Vernon (HT & SP) and Lauren Edwards (100m & 200m), plus Joan Trimble and Clare McLeish, non-scoring. It was a good team performance and now places us equal top of the Western Division, with Walton, on league points (although behind them on match points). Walton will now know that the K&P challenge is serious and they are likely to bring a full team to Woking, so we'll need to cover all events to secure the win we need to take the league.

The Men welcomed two Rosenheim scoring debutants at opposite ends of the experience spectrum, with Matt Broderick (U17) producing an impressive 11.99m pb to win the Triple Jump, and the brave if slightly reluctant, Jon Cook (M50), finishing a creditable 3rd in the 3K. Elsewhere there were good wins for Andy Wheble in the Discus (also 2nd - HT), Aidan Fahey (100m), Chris Hall (200m) and our relay team (Adam Bellis, Chris Hall, Aidan Fahey and Jason-Louis Bernard). Multi-legend - Bilen Ahmet - did his usual rounds and provided valuable points in the 1500m, with Maris Kuklis (HJ), Adam Bellis (400m), and Phil Bearman Jnr (800m) all doing well to keep us on course for the victory. It was also great to have Gordon Lester, Pat Logan, Nick Logan, Chuck Isetts, Mike May, Kyan Koranteng, Richard Solomon and Peter Wilkins all non-scoring to create a really strong K&P presence.

Men's team manager, Humphrey Waddington, will be stepping down due to work commitments at the end of this season, after 5 years in charge. Very sadly, work will also keep him away from the last match at Woking (he's in Iceland - the country, not the store), but he'd dearly love to finish the season unbeaten. The other clubs tend to be strong for the last match, as they fight for places in the final, so he's calling for one last big effort from the team. It would be great to get as many athletes out as we can, both scorers and non-scorers, to celebrate the remarkable record we have in the Western Division and stick it to the other clubs! Please be there!
