TM Gill Broderick's Report on a very promising start to the campaign.

Match 1 EBBISHAM LEAGUE – Sutton Arena 14th April - By Gill Broderick (TM)

The U13s and U15s started off the first DIV 1 match with great team results and camaraderie and when they watched their team members excelling in events, it certainly raised their game, as individuals, in their events. We were fortunate for the sunny day albeit slightly windy (not good down the back straight) but coupled with fantastic team spirit the boys performed one of the best meetings in many a year. Overall we finished third with 147 behind Croydon 172 & Herne Hill 175, and we were clear by far from the 6th, 5th and 4th teams.

Great performances by the 6 U13 boys of Jorge Beltrao, Ben Ashmore, Ben Paton, Charlie Dugdale, Jack Westley and Blaize Lee-Blackwood.

We were awarded first in the javelin – Charlie threw a PB in 28.44m and after missing 4 weeks of training through a broken toe. Ben A in the long jump, and competing for his first time for K&P – 3.76m. Jorge and Ben P A & B 800m – 2.35.5 and 2.37.0 respectively, Same two boys excelled again in the 300m A & B winners in 48.2 & 51.7. Obviously, the rest of the team are not to escape without any mention. Jack, who recently joined, stuck his neck out by filling in with Javelin and Shot and then performed magnificently in the 1500m which he says ‘he’s more at home with’. Jorge did the long jump and for someone who hasn’t jumped before (3,55m) is pretty good! Ben A is showing great style and speed in the sprints and, Blaize, is showing a big improvement too. Must mention Ben P in the HJ – cleared a PB in 1.10m after saying’ ‘I can only jump about 70cm’. And also thanks to Blaize who stepped in to throw shot with Jack.

A final say however, has to be the magnificent team in the 4 x 200m. WE WON. I haven’t seen any U13 sprint team win this relay (up against Croydon and Herne Hill) in all the years I have been attending. They were 1.4 seconds in front of Croydon and 5 seconds in front of Herne Hill. I have to say the Blaize ran a ‘blazing’ 2nd leg…so much faster than his individual 200m. Jorge, Ben P, Blaize & Ben A all ran superbly as they held in and sprinted faster than the wind down the back straight.

Our U15s certainly were a dominant force: Souleyman Bah, Harry Reynolds, Aaron Bruce, Harry Morgan, Charlie Townend, George Chaplin, Jamie Howard, Samuel Sturmer, Oscar Tyrell, Leon Newman, George King, Joshua Hall.

Souleyman tripped after the start of the 100m but still produced 12.3. Would he have ducked under 12.0? He has a new athlete on his shoulder to keep him on his toes, Jamie ran 12.0 in the non scoring race then was given a scoring 200m time of 25.0 which equalled first place but was given 2nd. Harry ran a good 2.12.3 (amazing 800m) and was 2nd. He had also played football all morning as did Ben Ashmore and Joshua Hall – so thanks boys for coming out and running. Harry and Aaron gained good points in the 400m 61.3 and 62.7. Good team running in the 1500m by Joshua and George K. George ran his first track 1500m for us and will be improving throughout the season. It was seen that Josh’s legs were tired from footie, but nonetheless, was close to 5 mins and should be pleased with his first track run.

In the field, our Javelin throwers, Oscar Tyrrell and Leon Newell won the A & B U15 event in 29.80m and 26.87m – both earning personal bests - with Harry Robinson,as a Non Scorer, doing likewise and pipping both with 31.60. High jumpers of Harry Morgan and Charlie Townend were 2nd and 1st - A & B – jumping 1.40m and 1.30m. Charlie, I’m sure jumped his best height. Our triple jumpers of Souleyman and Samuel faced tough competition. Souleyman had just ran his 200m and with a sore knee finished the event as 2nd B. Samuel was promoted to A string and went over the 10m mark (10.04m). Oscar threw 23.29 in the discus for second and George C stepped in to throw discus for us and earned valuable points in the B event. George also ran a non scoring 1500m in a personal best of 5.36.0. So I think he is very pleased about that.

The 4 x 200m relay team, Souleyman had banged his knee badly so Aaron stepped in (both Aaron and Harry had only run a 400m 20 mins earlier) but they seemed recovered enough to run as fast as they could to help the other team members of Jamie and Samuel – and they finished in 3rd in 1.49.8) some 8 seconds in front of the 4th team.

Aaron Marlow(Sprints) and Olly Wilson were our Under 11 complement, with the latter again looking very lively over both 75m and 600m.

When I look at the team names, it’s evident that the new coaching structures which have been in place have improved the consistency and quality of running, throwing and jumping. And not forgetting that many of the athletes have progressed from the Kestrel running club (some are still training with these groups while also having joined the club to compete). Well done to all coaches: Frank, Susanne, Richard Holt, Richard Vassell, Vanessa Hammett, John Shepherd and me in coaching these athletes.

Phenomenal is the word I can describe the team! Thank you for competing, thanks to officials on the day, David Barrington, Sheila Brackpool, Maurice Joyce, Frank Shubert, Susanne Dietrich, Sean Paton and Eduardo Beltrao – the latter for his pep talks I believe!

BREAKING NEWS: Jamie Howard’s 12.0 100m = club U15 record. WELL DONE.
