Third Round reports from your TMs
Veterans League 3 Ewell
Our 3rd match saw us finish 4th again, and climb up to 4th overall in the South London division.
We had excellent 1sts from Andy Robinson (800 and 3000) on his first Vets League outing of the season, and he also contributed to our 2nd place in the relay (with Mark Roberts (who also won the Shot and was a good 2nd in the Pole Vault), Adam Bellis (our other track event winner in the 200m) and Ollie Oladele). Steve Simmonds gave us another victory in the Hammer and Jon Cook came 2nd in the M50 3000m, while Cashel came through for 3rd in the M60 200m.
We only had gaps in the M35 800 and the M50 and M60 Pole Vault, and two absences caused by traffic jams, and injury were covered by others. Rupert Bole doubled at M50 800 and Triple Jump, and we also had Draco Mkpa, David Greenfield, Frank Schubert,Geoff Reed, Chuck Isetts (making his season debut in the Shot rather than sprints) and Mike May.
Thanks to David Barrington and Tony Cook and all who mucked in to cover our officiating duties in the Men's and Women's Hammer,(which included Geoff and Cashel above, plus Jo Bennett & Ian Frankish of E&E and our own throwers. Ed).
Our last match is at Croydon on 8th. July. Let's make the most of it.
Report by Nicky Atkins
Our 3rd match was at Epsom & Ewell’s home ground in good English summer evening conditions. We were a few team members down but everyone took on the task of filling in as many gaps as they could.
Susanne ran the 200m A runner while Helen Cook having not run on the track for 40 years was thrown into the deep end by running under her age category as the 200m B runner and did the team proud. Nicki Murphy ran in the over 50 age group and won her race (32.6). Liz Richardson achieved a new PB in the 800m while team manager tried to chase Epsom’s Jane Davies down the home straight whilst hoping to achieve a sub 3.00.0 minute 800m. This didn’t happen but scored a useful 7 points. Rosalind Darby completed the 800m trio and scored 6 points. This same trio ran in the 3000m 30 minutes later. Nicky managed to catch Liz around half way, with Croydon’s Steph Upton sitting on Nicky’s shoulder. It was then team work between Liz and Nicky, both taking turns to lead until the final lap when Liz took the lead – 12.33.9 & 12.38.8 with Step Upton finishing in 12.43.0.
Susanne and Nicki Murphy both jumped in the long jump event and Nicki threw the discus in the over 50 age group. Camilla easily won the over 35 age category in the discus and hammer throw. Unfortunately we had no over 50 hammer thrower or pole vault competitor in this competition. Sadly we also couldn’t fill in any of the over 60 age group events.
The grand finale was the 4 x 400m where we finished 2nd place out of 3 teams. The athletes involved were, in running order: Susanne, Nicki M, Liz & Nicky A. I must add that Liz & Nicki had only just completed the 3000m and we were both amazed at how our legs co-operated!
In this match we again finished in 2nd position and are still laying in 2nd place to Epsom and Ewell Harriers.
Injured team member Dina Francis came to support us and it was lovely to see her again. Thank you to everyone who support the team and helped with the organisation and helped officiate events.
Our next match is on Monday 8th July at Croydon Arena.
