Throughout the season the weather has definitely been on Kingston’s SAL squad side leading to some excellent performances from both the men and women throughout!
With the first match at Woking being so early in the season, our persuasion skills were tested to the max in rounding up the numbers to compete. It proved effective, with athletes stepping into events at the drop of a hat in order to drag in points, leading to a solid 2nd place overall, just 12 points short of Woking.
The second match proved much easier to recruit athletes, with a large turn out of both younger and more seasoned athletes, probably aided by the match being held close to home at St Marys, Twickenham. Once again, some solid performances from all lead us to a 2nd overall behind a very strong Brighton and Hove team.
The third match was the first of the home fixtures, with a great turn out of athletes. The throwers did especially well with Gareth Cook and Pippa Wingate being named as athletes of the match! Needless to say we won comfortably, 20 points clear of second place Tonbridge.
The fourth fixture, again at Kingsmeadow was very close, just lacking a few more female athletes. There were some good performances by all Kingston athletes. We fell just two points short of the winners Epsom and Ewell, who trumped us with a very strong women’s team. Andover & Overton also travelled well on both the men and women’s sides and only beat us by a single point.
The last fixture we finished strongly at Kingsmeadow with a win over Croydon Harriers, unfortunately this lead to us falling just short of promotion.
There was a fantastic effort by all who turned up, particularly by a lacking women’s side. Dominique Blaze, Harriet Lester, Camilla Thrush, Pheobe Law, Pippa Wingate and Elle Butcher all stepped into uncomfortable events for them to help the team effort.
The men also pushed hard to win and filled all spaces bar a B-String 5,000m runner.
Man of the season was Bilen Ahmet
Women of the season were Camilla Thrush + Pippa Wingate
