February highlights

The XC season is now coming towards its conclusion with a quick succession of high profile races.

Susanne Dietrich reports …

Building on her win at the Surrey Schools, U17 Phoebe Law continued her formidable season by coming 4th in the English Nationals on Saturday 22nd February. Naturally, she has been selected to represent Surrey in the upcoming CAU Intercounties in Birmingham on 8th March. U13 Sam Shaw, U15 Josh Hall, U13 Darcy Bourne and U15 Mollie O’Sullivan have also been selected – congratulations!

The selection for the 2014 Minimarathon is now also out.  U13 boys Jorge Beltrao, Daniel Merighi, Matthew Hall, U13 girls Kathryn and Eleanor Bartle, U15 boys Josh Hall and George Chaplin, U15 girls Mollie O’Sullivan, Lucie Fletcher and  Rebecca Keddie, U17 men Phil Bearman and Matt Stevens and U17 women Phoebe Law and Marlie Carter-Edwards have been selected to represent the Borough of Kingston. We currently do not have the full overview, but we would expect that of our athletes living or going to school outside of Kingston, many more will have earned themselves selection.

At the Surrey Indoors Athletics Champs, K&P was represented by a strong squad, both on the Junior as well as the Senior Men’s side. For the very many excellent performances, we have to refer you to the Surrey Athletics website. Clearly, the highlights were a bronze medal for Jordan Smith-Bent and a fifth place for Justin Green in the ever so competitive 60m Senior Men’s 60m sprints final, a bronze for Chris Hall in the Senior Men’s Long jump, and two medals for the “big guys”, namely gold for Chris Dack and bronze for Gareth Cook in the Senior men’s shot put. The juniors were even more glorious: gold with a championship record for Darcy Bourne in the U13 long jump, bronze for Ella Eze in the U15 60m, gold for Pippa Early in the U15 60m hurdles and the long jump, with Leila Legris a strong 4th, gold for Rhianna Reynolds in the U15 high jump, and Rhianna, also starting out of age in the U17 triple jump, won this event and is now ranked 2nd in the country for the U15s and in the top 10 for the U17. Caitlin Dimbleby, besides her persistent hip injury, won the U17 women’s pole vault, as did Will Gwynne in the U17 men’s. Thomas White and Aaron Marlow were in action for the U13 boys, Sam Morey for the U15 boys and Max Perez-Diaz for the U20 men. More medals came round for the U17 men, with Alex Parkinson winning the 60m hurdles, Alex Meaklim taking bronze and brother Darren coming 5th. Gabriel Finch won the U17 high jump, Darren Meaklim with a new PB came 4th, and in the U20 age group, Matthew Broderick won silver. Alex Meaklim won another bronze in the triple jump, with Alex Parkinson coming 5th. Well done to all.
