The Club is desperately sad to have to advise you that David Gibbons has died, losing a six-month battle with illness.
The Reception into St Joseph's Catholic Church, Montem Road, New Malden on Thursday 10th April at 17:00pm followed by the Funeral mass at 10:00am on Friday 11th April with burial at Surbiton Cemetery.
David joined the Club late in his running career at the end of 2001 but he immediately embraced the sport as an M45 with considerable enthusiasm and, significantly, the enjoyment which can be gleaned from running with others. His contribution to the Men's Cross Country 'pack' singled him out as something of a 'king' of friendly and apposite banter, not least with those marshalling K&P courses! Shortly after he joined, his daughter,Johanna, also became a member, and she was a regular in our Women's CC squad throughout the first decade of this century.
Dave also tackled track training regularly at Kingsmeadow for several years and, although he never debuted on the track in competition, his sheer friendliness and affability endeared him to the groups on training evenings.
Although,of late, injury had deflected him away from the sport,he will be forever remembered for the pleasure he brought to his fellow members.
Others have contributed their thoughts.
Bob McDonough writes:
"This is terribly sad. Dave's unfailing good humour made him such good company at matches, always there with a ready joke or cheery comment to brighten things up. His good humoured and friendly presence will be hugely missed;he was a smashing bloke to have had the pleasure of knowing and running with".
Nicky Atkins writes:
"Gillian Libretto introduced David and I to Richard Holt, who was looking to form a coaching group in 2002.I took over coaching David from 2009 but his interest in running, due to injury,in particular, was dwindling and I think he took up fishing. David did not race on the track but chose to run on the road and cross country. Mark Roberts' wife,Suzanne, used to give him massages and nicknamed him - 'Concrete' - as his calves were so tight! David was always so cheery. I never heard him complain".
Cashel Riordan writes:
"I was being passed by Dave in the Surrey Classic 10k back in the late 1990's and suggested to him that as he had recently taken up running he should join the club. I was delighted not least as since then he has been my regular driver to XC's as well as for flagging the men's XC course. On behalf of the XC team I delivered a card to him last with the team photo and Johanna has said Dave was "quite touched".
Peter Waddington writes:
I am very, very sorry to hear about "Big Dave" and so is Humphrey. We had no idea he was ill. He was a really nice guy and I can't picture him without seeing him smiling.
