The recent SAL fixture at Dartford was contested with a very small team of athletes with only 9 scoring Men and 4 Scoring Ladies bothering to turn out for the Club. It was therefore no surprise that we fished last of the 4 competing teams on the day. In total there were 34 out of the 72 events on the day where we failed to field an athlete or team. It was particularly sad that we had no athletes competing in a Track event over more than 400 metres and also were unable to send out any relay teams.
However, it was not all bad news as we excelled in the Throws as Chris Dack, Gareth Cook and Andy Wheble all picked up at least one victory in the Men’s events with Chris’ Shot earning him the Divisions top award for “Athlete of the Division”. We also led the way in the Women’s events with Pippa Wingate and Camilla Thrush doing the ”double” in the Discus and Shot as well as Pippa winning the “A” string Hammer.
In the Jumps, Chris Hall (LJ & TJ), Gordon Lester (PV), Dominique Blaize (HJ “A”) and Pippa (HJ “B”) all secured victories.
Meanwhile, despite our shortage of Track athletes there were wins for Tom Parry (400h), Chris Hall (110H) with a double victory in the Women’s 100H from Dominique (A) and Ellie Arnfield (B).
Special mention must be given to one of our Masters athletes, Robin Shaw, who turned out in 3 of the Jumps events to secure some points. There were also appearances in the Sprints from Andre Nembhard and Alex Parkinson, whilst Renzo de Libero competed as a non-scorer in the Shot. All, in common with the rest of the team, put in spirited performances.
The final scores were Dartford 220, Bexley 187, Team Dorset 145 and K&P 120. Our next fixture is at Battersea Park on 21st June. Last season we missed out on promotion to Division 1 by a single point. So far this year we languish at the bottom of the table and it will need a far stronger team in our next 3 fixtures to ensure we are not relegated to Division 3. We also need people to officiate at the SAL fixtures. At Dartford we only had Maurice Joyce and David Hillyer which meant that instead of getting a break between events, athletes were having to help as well. Can all Members from U17 upwards please do their best to turn out for the Club. After all that is what you are training for.
