Excellent individual performances, but
a disappointing team result in the U13/U15 YDL
Our young athletes found the second YDL match in sunny Brighton much tougher than first outing. We could celebrate a number of excellent individual performances, including English Schools’ entry standards by Molly O’Sullivan (800m), Ella Eze (100m, 200m) and Sophie Dimbleby (JT). Sophie also set a new Club record with her javelin throw, as did the U15 girls’ 4x100m team (Mica Powell, Rhianna Reynolds, Amy Counihan, Ella Eze). Great performances and our athletes’ commendable willingness to score additional points in disciplines outside their comfort zone were, however, not enough to compensate for the many gaps in the U15 boys’ team. The result was a disappointing joint 5th position overall, sharing last place with Winchester who are hosting the next match.

This time our team consisted of just 31 athletes. U13 boys and U15 girls were at full strength, while we were very short of U15 boys. Again our athletes could celebrate plenty of PB’s, and in contrast to the track results from Ashford this time fully valid. The quality of the team was displayed in the number of AAA graded results: Grade 4’s for Ben Ashmore (HJ), Jorge Beltrao (200m, 800m), Matthew Hall (1500m, LJ), Luca di Libero (SP), Aaron Bruce (800m), Sam Shaw (1500m), Samuel Sturmer (200m), Hannah Lester (70H), Grade 3’s for Thomas White (100m, 200m), Olly Wilson (800m),Amelia Bell (75m), Lucy Tunnacliffe (75m, 150m), Rhianna Reynolds (75H(, and excellent performances from our girls with Grade 2’s for Rhianna Reynolds (LJ, HJ), and Grade 1’s for Amelia Bell (150m), Sophie Dimbleby (JT), Ella Eze (100m, 200m), Mollie O’Sullivan (800m).
Thanks to everyone for their help during the match, in particular Hattie and Jonathon Bartle who got us safely to Brighton and home again, Mary Dimbleby and Julie Reynolds who managed the team while I was timekeeping, warm-up coach Matt Elmore, track judge Colin Watts, and our field official team of Hattie Bartle, James Bell, Susanne Dietrich, Dorinda Lester, Mark Reynolds and Beverly Tunnacliffe.
U13 Girls: Amelia Bell, Hannah Lester, Jessica Lillywhite, Lucy Tunnacliffe, Gemma Watts
U15 Girls: Eleanor Bartle, Kathryn Bartle, Amy Counihan, Sophie Dimbleby, Ella Eze, Annabel Hobday, Rebecca Keddie, Mollie O’Sullivan, Mica Powell, Rhianna Reynolds, Jessica Westley
U13 Boys: Ben Ashmore, Jorge Beltrao, Ben Collier, Matthew Hall, Luca di Libero, Aaron Marlow, Jack Westley, Thomas White, Tom Williams, Olly Wilson

The result of the 2nd match puts us in 5th place overall in the league table, which is too close to the relegation place (6th) for comfort. In last place are Winchester & District, who are hosting the next match and will try using their home advantage to climb up in the table. To be competitive in this division we have to improve our turnout and get back to 40+ athletes.
The next YDL match is on Sunday (!) 22 June in Winchester.
