K&P secure top half place in first division 1 season

Much in contrast to the weather forecast of thunderstorms and hail, the U13/U15 season ended with the hottest match day of the year. Certainly not the right conditions for any PB effort in the middle distance races, but many of our sprinters and field eventers made use of the warm weather to either equal or set new PB’s.

Once again several athletes went well out of their comfort zone to fill events, like notably Ben Paton in the hurdles, Lucy Tunnacliffe in the 800m, and Zoe Shepherd in the 1200m. Our match started slowly, but we steadily climbed from 5th place to 3rd position, creeping up on 2nd placed Ashford & Thanet all the time. Despite some very good relay results the gap proved too much, but the team finished in very respectable 3rd place.

Fitting for a home match, we had an excellent turnout of 46 athletes, and even more athletes had been willing to compete but due to the league restrictions could not be selected for the team. We had again plenty of AAA graded results across the team: Grade 4’s for Lucy Tunnacliffe (800m), Jasmine Woodroffe (LJ), Leila Legris (75H), Ben Ashmore (100m, 200m, LJ), Matthew Hall (1500m), Luke Newell (JT, SP),Adam Williams-Baffoe (HJ),Olly Wilson (800m), Alan Berkeley (HJ), Sam Shaw (1500m), Samuel Sturmer (100m, LJ), Grade 3’s for Matthew Hall (HJ), Zak Wort (1500m), and excellent performances with Grade 2’s for Amelia Bell (75m), Lucy Tunnacliffe (150m), Sophie Dimbleby (JT), Rhianna Reynolds (LJ) and Grade 1’s for Jasmine Woodroffe (75m, HJ), Amelia Bell (150m), Mollie O’Sullivan (1500m).

Thanks to everyone for their help during the match: Mary Dimbleby and Julie Reynolds looking after the team, track judge Colin Watts, timekeeper Peter Waddington, and our field official team of James Bell, Gareth Cook, Susanne Dietrich, Yvan Legris, Dorinda Lester, Ian Marlow, Mark + Harry Reynolds, and Beverly  Tunnacliffe. Many thanks also to our home officials team around meeting managers Mike May and David Barrington (Sheila Brackpool, Gillian Libretto, Les Hatton, Doris Dean, Brenda Ford, Maurice Joyce, Cashel Riordan, Brian Harlick, Gordon Lester, Verna Smith).

Our team (athletes in bold competed in all four matches this season):

U13 Boys: Ben Ashmore, Josh Bellamy, Ben Collier, Matthew Hall, Aaron Marlow, Murray McFarlane, Luke Newell, Ben Taplin, Jack Westley, Adam Williams-Baffoe, Tom Williams, Olly Wilson

By beating Brighton & Hove on the day we managed to leapfrog them into 3rd place overall behind promoted Bracknell AC and runners up Ashford & Thanet. This is a very good achievement, considering that we were the newcomers into division 1 this season – congratulations to all athletes who made the first division 1 season a success. Promotion into the Premier division would have been an unrealistic goal this year, but we hould aim to be in the mix for the top place in 2015.
