A coveted place for the first time in Division One of the County Mens CC League came a step closer with a convincing win in the 2nd round home promotion.
Though 6 of the successful team from the Round One match were unavailable,a substantial turnout of 21 runners warmed the cockles of the heart of Team Sec,Bob McDonough. Dennis Ojera, replacing an indisposed Jamie McCullagh as our likely number one on the day,led at the 'bell' and, though hauled in somewhat, held on for 6th(27.58) in a field of 211 finishers, compared with just 116 in match one.On a reasonably firm course,Mark Reed(12th-28.30),Mike Maranzano(16th-29.00),M45 Ant Budarkiewicz(17th-29.03) & Andy Arbour(23rd-29.32) - The Old Faithfuls - as usual gave us a healthy top five. The 2nd five have,in the past, given us cause for some concern but, this time, with newcomer Ross Shaddick(29th-30.07) & with the long-hoped-for appearance of our Under 20 squad en bloc for the first time in a senior league CC match - Craig Price(33rd-30.16),Humphrey Waddington(48th-30.56) & Michael Huntley(52nd-31.11) - plus Andy Lawrence(47th-30.54),that concern was swept away and we closed in at 52nd with a fine low score of 274 points.
Thereafter came Ray Allen(54),Graeme Horstead(78),Bob McDonough(98),John Ratcliff(102),Simon Croall(135),Peter Wilkins(145),an elated U20 Matthew Boddy(148),Graham Huntley(151),David Greenfield(159),Dave Gibbons(178) & Matthew Hyett(182). Teamwise,with 274 we headed Hercules W 391 & Walton 393 and,overall,we have a substantial,though not uncatchable,lead with 637 from Walton 765 & Croydon 873. Full scores elsewhere on this site.
In the U17/U15/U13 races,Dina Kalonji(U17) turned in his best performance for the club with a stormer in 4th;Alain Ashford(15th U15) & Edmund Croall(8th U13) completed a slightly disappointing team effort.
Features of a formidable day included fine 'performances' from our team of officials which included several men & women seniors/vets before & after their events(Ta everso!);a formidable declaration of 97 from Stragglers Men;and a certain come-uppance for some attendees who repeatedly ignored requests, made both before and on the day, not to park on the road verges(it should be noted that this jeopardises ALL races staged in the Park by ANY club or organisation).
See elsewhere on this site for full results of both mens & womens fixtures.
