With lots of girls away on holiday and only 6 U17’s we were worried it would be a struggle to beat Croydon to win the league title for the second year in a row.
We started the day with Leila Legris & Jessica Westley competing in Pole Vault for the first time. We had hoped they could just manage the opening height of 1.10m but that actually both managed 1.30m, this meant 2nd for Leila and 1st in the B string for Jessica and a great 13 points.
Meanwhile in the U15 Hammer Rebecca Keddie & Eleanor Bartle won A & B string. In the U17 Hammer Louise Trott was second in the A string and Nina Gibbins won the in the B giving us a 22 point lead over Croydon after the first few events.
We were very strong in the field but knew it would be difficult to match Croydon on the track. We had double wins in both U17 and U15 long jump, Laura Darcey & Petra Kone in the U17’s and Rhianna Reynolds & June Jiang in the U15’s. Lucy Tunnacliffe & Hetty Arnfield won both strings of the U13 Discus and Darcy Bourne & Jasmin Woodroffe did the same in the U13 High Jump.
However the girls also excelled themselves on the track. Everyone knew the most important thing was to beat Croydon and where that wasn't possible finish as close to them as possible and that’s just what they did.
Amelia Bell led the way with another fantastic win in the 100m. In the 800m races we picked up a magnificent 31 point thanks to Rebecca & Annabel (U15) and Gemma & Nellwyn (U13). In the U17 Lucie Fletcher was the only competitor in the 800m so had a somewhat lonely run.
Thanks to people stepping outside their comfort zone we also managed 25 points from the 1500m races with great performances from Louisa Stoney & Zoe Shepherd (U13) and Scarlett Walker & Caitlin Williams (U15).
The sprints produced PB’s for Petra Kone (U17) and Mica Powell (U15) in both 100m & 200m. Eleanor Bartle (U15) & Lucy Tunnacliffe (U13) both got new PB’s in the 200m. In the U17’s Eleanor Arnfield won both her 300m hurdles and her flat 300m.
Being able to fill the B string in most events gained us many valuable points. B string wins for Kathryn Bartle (U15 Discus), Jessica Westley (U15 hurdles) and Leila Legris (U15 high jump) meant we were able to maintain our lead as the match progressed.
With all these marvellous performances we knew we were doing well and had led for most if not all of the match. Croydon managed 3 wins in the relays but it was too little, too late.
The final score was announced and thanks to the amazing team spirit and can do attitude of our girls we were confirmed as match winners and League Champions. In the end no other team came close and we won by a huge 162 points!!
On the day we had a number of U11’s who competed in a variety of events, there is lots of new talent in this age group and will be great when some of them move up to U13 next year and become fully fledged team members. Well done to Sophie Doherty, Kira Holt, Emilia Chittenden, Isabel Bibby, Bronwyn Ackroyd and Esme Cerilli.
Many congratulations to everyone who competed on the day and those who competed in the earlier matches too as the league is based on the points gained in all 3 matches.
The trophy will be presented at the cup final in Ewell on 30th of August so hope that you can all be there to be part of the celebration.
As usual a huge thank you to all our parents, coaches, officials who supported us on the day. In particular a big thank you to Cathy Arnfield & Susanne Mischke who helped with the team and Maurice Joyce, Frank Schubert, Richard Vassall, Hatty Bartle and Sam Vassall for officiating.
