id1664-Lily B Cup Match – at Epsom & Ewell 30th August 2014

Written by James Bell

After winning the Lily B League two weeks ago, it was time to re-group for the final team event of the 2014 Athletics calendar.  There was a very good turnout with 39 K&P athletes in the team competing for the cup.  Through the earlier events of the summer we knew it would be a tough ask to win the cup as we were competing against the likes of Croydon Harriers, Herne Hill Harriers and Guildford & Godalming AC.

The weather was not ideal for track or field events with gusty winds making it difficult for the athletes to register new Personal Bests (PBs), for the sprinters there was a nasty head-wind.

However, despite all that the girls arrived full of enthusiasm and the face painting with team colours began.  This really set the tone of the day with the girls mixing between age groups and all looking out to encourage each other.

Knowing that Croydon were the real threat, the day began on the track with the hurdles and then the sprints. With no real standout individual performances on the day, K&P kept up with Croydon (who are the sprint specialists), with many 2nd and 3rd places. Meanwhile in the field K&P were collecting up lots of points. By the time it came to the relays K&P were in the lead but was it big enough? With Croydon strong in the relays, the Kingston girls had to all make sure they got the baton home safely and picked up as many points as possible. This I can gladly say happened and the Lily B 2014 cup was won!!

By the end of the day the face painting had escalated to full body paint.  There was a real sense of a team and it was befitting that at the end of the season so many athletes turned up and fought for the cup.  Whilst the K&P girls all have theirs goals and favourite events, it has been a great team effort that has won them the League and Cup double.

Perhaps the event of the day was the under 11s relay.  They set off (or not) without the lead runner!  The other three girls watched and waited for the K&P Blue, White and Black shirt to appear around the first bend but it never came!!  Not to worry, the team (of 4 this time) was rounded up and they were entered into a later heat.  They competed with great gusto and enthusiasm against some under 13 relay teams.  A taste of things to come for them.

It was a great way to end the season and winning the Cup was the icing on the cake.  Now some of the U13 girls will be moving up to U15 and some of the U15 girls will be moving up to U17.  However, a special thank you to the U17s who competed for the last time in this Lily B format and will be moving on to U20s.

There was a strong U11 turnout ensuring that the “2012 Legacy” lives on in K&P Harriers.

A special big thank you to Mary and Julie, without which, this League & Cup double may never have been won.  Their time and devotion to ensuring that the teams are complete for all age groups and that all events, wherever possible, were filled was key.

Not to forget Frank and Susanne who, in between officiating events, took time out to provide coaching advice to some of the athletes.

And finally, this report is not complete with the mention that Rhianna went to great lengths and made cup cakes for all the athletes. These were made personal with their names, their favourite event and the club vest all in icing on the top of the cake.

Well done to all and keep up the good training as you will have to do it all again next year!
