id1720-SAL Twickenham report

Written by Gordon Lester

The first Southern Athletics League Match at Twickenham, and one of the first competitions of the season, went off with a bang with a FANTASTIC win for Kingston and Poly! It was an outstanding competition that held a great team atmosphere, mixing newer athletes with the more seasoned SAL’ers with both ladies and gents putting out near full teams.

The sun was shining and we were gearing for a win from the beginning with many athletes stepping up to fill in alternative events in order to bring in the all important team points. It was a tightly fought competition throughout the day between us and the hosts, St Marys, with us nudging ahead as the day wore on.

Special mentions go to the SAL Man of the Match Chris Dack, also to Gareth Cook who has entered his 30th year of throwing over 50 metres in the Hammer. As always, many thanks to Bilen our chief event filler, for stepping up to the plate once again! This is by no means the end of all the fantastic results everyone performed brilliantly.

And by no means least, many special mentions to the ladies, where we had an amazing turn out!! Not only allowing us to fill a team sheet for the first time in many years but raking in the points with many 1st positions helping contribute to winning the match! Special mentions to Jess Westley who helped fill events as well as PB, 2.40metres in the pole vault, Dominique Blaize PB in the Hammer with 37.90m and Sophie Dimbleby in the Javelin.

Many thanks to all those who came out to support, compete and officiate for us, it is very much appreciated by all, making the competition run smoothly! We cannot tell you how much it means to us to be able to declare full teams and have everyone turn out and enjoy themselves so thank you from us for coming along and we hope to see you on the 31st May at Lewes!
