id173-AFC Wimbledon and Kingsmeadow

Written by DB

With the management contract for Kingsmeadow Athletics Stadium due for renewal in early 2006,the tendering process has begun.

As is their right,AFC Wimbledon are highly likely to make a bid and this was confirmed at the Dons Trust AGM on December 16th.

Whilst one has to have respect for what AFC Wimbledon has achieved(or though perhaps not if you are a Kingstonian supporter!),the very thought of a soccer club having responsibility for managing what is primarily a first-class track & field facility(even under a contract similar to that under which DC Leisure currently operate) sends shivers down one's spine! Just ask Croydon Harriers or Walton AC,to name but two.

So,if you have qualms about this possible development, make it known - perhaps write to the Surrey Comet and other local papers or to the RBK Client Services Officer at Guildhall - or even to the Dons Trust itself ( website address -

The tendering process is a long one and all applicants have to satisfy numerous conditions along the way. At present,it is known that DC Leisure, the present management, will be tendering again - they manage a number of sites around the country, including several in Surrey and Kingston,as well as other major track & field facilities such as Exeter Arena.

Make your views heard! An article on the subject appeared in the December 22nd edition of the Surrey Comet
