id1734-Veterans League Match 3- Men's

Written by Mike May

A depleted team with only one 5000m runner (out of a possible four), no walkers and no triple jumpers, made the trip to Walton on Thames, but some good scoring by those who did turn out meant we managed to come 4th and are still third overall after 3 matches. A reasonable turnout at Croydon on 13th July will hopefully maintain that position. Any volunteers for the 2000m walk gratefully accepted.

Our top scorer was Mark Roberts with a win in the Discus and 2nd places at High Jump and Javelin plus a share in our 4 x 200 relay win (along with Adam Bellis, Pat Logan and Ollie Oladele). Our best track event was the 200m where we had wins from
Adam (m35), Pat (m50, coming back from injury and making his season's debut in the league) and Chuck Isetts.

Other notable scores came from David Barrington, 2nd in the M70 800m and new M70 Geoff Reed whose first m70 event turned out to be the Javelin where he came 3rd, although he also ran the m60 5000m (another 3rd place).

Thanks to Humphrey and Peter Waddington for covering our High Jump officiating and ensuring our athletes could concentrate on their events.

Our team also included Nick Woodhead, Ed Paxton, and Mike Edwards (hope the twisted ankle heals quickly) on the track and Renzo di Libero (3rd in M50 discus), and Mike May in the field.

Events at Croydon on 13 July are 100,400 and 1500 , 4 x 100 relay and 2000m walk on the track and Javelin, Shot, High Jump and Long Jump in the field.
