Surrey Cross Country Champs and Ladies League – Match 3 Report
The Surrey Cross Country Championships were held on Sunday 16th January at Denbies Vineyard in Dorking. Heavy rain in the week leading up to the races meant that the challenging course became even muddier and more difficult to navigate. Only a small team was entered and subsequent withdrawals due to International call-up (well done to Phoebe Law for a superb 6th place finish at the Edinburgh International in a GB vest) and unfortunate illness on the day meant that we had an incomplete team. Nicky Atkins (89th – 43:22) and Liz Richardson (97th – 44:57) were the only athletes to complete the course.
A week later, on 16th January, our ladies and junior teams had their 3rd match in the Surrey League at Priory Park, Reigate. This time the course was less muddy but frozen in places and conditions were a lot cooler.
Senior & Veteran Ladies
A good turnout saw 7 senior athletes race the 4.3 mile undulating course. In the Division 2 race, Nicky Atkins led the team home in 48th place (35:27), closely followed by Liz Richardson in 52nd (35:55). Next home was Jo Aherne in 70th place (37:06), followed by Nicki Murphy in 92nd place (38:39) with Rosaline Darby, having had a close race with her daughter, completing the scoring team in 121st place (41:09). Susannah Darby (125th – 41:22) and Caroline Jeffcote in 168th place (48:03), both pleased with their runs, completed the team finish in a Division 2 field of 177 athletes.
Despite missing our U20 athletes, the ladies ‘A’ team finished in 11th place (of 24 teams) to consolidate their mid-table position. Thanks to all that raced and particular thanks to Susanne Mischke and David Barrington for supporting the team.
The final league match will be held at Richmond Park on 13th February 2016. A reminder that all races will start 30 minutes earlier than usual and will incorporate the Club Championships for all age groups U17 and above.
Illness and a busy January running schedule meant that we only had 3 girls available for the Junior races. They all had solid runs and it should give them confidence when they tackle the course again next week at the Surrey Schools. Our sole U17, Rebecca Keddie, led them home in 21:11 (8th/13), closely followed by our two U15s: Imogen Busa in 21:31 (20th/28) and Annabel Hobday, 21:46 (22nd/28).
