id1810-YDL LAG Match 1 Report

Written by Frank Schubert

Small team, but strong performances in first YDL match

Right from the start of our first YDL match this season the team spirit was fantastic. The hurdles set the scene, with our young novice hurdlers all scoring valuable points. It soon became clear that our U13 girls and boys this year are very competitive, with a string of top results. They were matched by the U15 teams, made up of (mostly) experienced athletes. Everyone did their best to not only achieve good results in their favoured events, but also get more points for the team by filling some of the many gaps. Despite the small team, we fielded all relay teams, thanks to Anna Gawander, Hannah Lester, Ben Ashmore and Ché Dyson-Holland all running the 4x100m and 4x300m relays within 10 minutes. Team scores during the course of the match were encouraging, placing us midfield between 4th and 6th place. The final result was very close, but the officials’ points pushed us ahead of Walton into 6th place.

A turnout of only 26 athletes made this the smallest ever K&P team in the club’s U13/U15 YDL history, but the team achieved our highest ever average point score per athlete – testimony to the excellent performances of all 26 team members. Many achieved PB’s and the quality was further demonstrated by the number of AAA graded results: Grade 4 for Lucy Atkins (LJ), Sophie Doherty (75m), Lucy Tunnacliffe (75H), Sebastian Chang (JT), Max Dickson (200m), Kai Mason (HJ), Ben Ashmore (LJ); Grade 3 for Lucy Atkins (150m), Amelia Bell (200m, 300m), Lucy Tunnacliffe (SP), Liam Macdonald (75H); excellent Grade 2 for Lucy Atkins (75m) and Grade 1 for Liam Macdonald (HJ).

Thanks to all parents for their help and encouragement during the match, in particular our novice track judge Doug Parry, timekeeper Maurice Joyce, and our field official team of Susanne Dietrich, James Bell, Ulrike Chang, Dorinda Lester and Beverly Tunnacliffe who earned us the full 55 officals’ points that secured 6th place for us. This highlights the importance of providing the full set of seven officials.

Our team:

U13 Girls: Lucy Atkins, Alix Baccardax, Sophie Doherty, Kira Holt, Poppy Parry, Evie Wilkinson

U15 Girls: Amelia Bell, Anna Gawander, Katie Harrison, Hollie Hennessy, Hannah Lester, Zoe Shepherd, Lucy Tunnacliffe

U13 Boys: Sebastian Chang, Max Dickson, Liam Macdonald, Kai Mason, Jacob Skinner

U15 Boys: Ben Ashmore, Jack Dickson, Luca Di Libero, Ché Dyson-Holland, Dylan Dyson-Holland, Aaron Marlow, Ben Taplin, Thomas White

Athletes of the match: U13 girls Lucy Atkins, U13 boys Liam Macdonald, U15 girls Amelia Bell, U15 boys Ben Ashmore.

The athletes and parents in the first match ensured that we are placed out of the relegation places, despite the low turnout. Once we are back to last years’ team size of 35-45 athletes, we will be in a very good position to fend off the likely challenge from Walton and Hillingdon. Just ten more athletes In Poole would have put us among the top four teams! All the remaining matches are at home or close by, so hopefully next time my challenge will be to decide who of the many worthy athletes to select. If you were not in the Poole team, please make sure that you perform in the Lily B (30/4) and Ebbisham (8 May) League if you don’t want to lose out.

The next YDL match is on Saturday 21 May at Guildford Spectrum.
