Excellent 2nd Place for K&P U17/U20 YDL Team in Season Opener
K&P’s U17/U20 team started the YDL season with a fantastic second place behind a much larger Winchester team on a sunny, but cold and blustery day in Southampton. Twenty-one athletes made the trip along with assorted parents and helpers who contributed a fantastic 55 points through helping with field events, time-keeping and track judging. Although conditions were difficult, many of our performances were extremely good with numerous PBs and two club records. As always, a key characteristic of the Kingston team was the willingness of athletes to earn points away from favoured events by filling in. We then ended the day on a high with an excellent victory for the U20 women’s 4x400M relay team.
The final standings after all the events and the bonus points for officials were as shown in the table below:
2 Kingston & Poly
3 Southampton AC
4 Camberley & Woking
5 Brighton & Hove AC
6 Croydon Harriers
7 Team Sussex
We had 9 individual athletes who won A string events: Max Perez-Diaz (U20M 400), Alex Parkinson (U20M 110H), William Gwynne (U20M Hammer & Pole Vault), Ellie Arnfield (U20W 400H), Kathryn Bartle (U17W 1500), Pippa Earley (U17W 80H), Rhianna Reynolds (U17W LJ & TJ).
There were 31 PBs across all the events, three of which were particularly notable. Jessica Westley, in a very competitive U17W Hammer competition, threw 42.82m, a new age group club record and an AAA Grade 3 performance. Pippa Earley ran 12.0s in the U17W 80H, which equalled the club record for that event and is an AAA Grade 2 performance. Finally Will Gwynne won the U20M Pole Vault, vaulting 4.10m, an AAA Grade 3 performance and 17cm higher than he had cleared previously.
Many congratulations to all the athletes who came to compete, particularly those with major exams on the horizon and those moving up from the U15s – we hope you enjoyed your first taste of Upper Age Group competition. Hopefully we will get a bigger team out for the next match at Kingsmeadow at the end of this month, which could give us a great chance of winning.
As mentioned, our officials points were vital so a huge thank you to all who helped out: timekeeper Susan Davies, track judge Hattie Bartle, field judges Susanne Dietrich, Gill Broderick, Mark Reynolds, Peter Meaklim, Susan Hobart and Julie Reynolds. Many thanks also to Jonathon and Hattie Bartle for driving the mini-bus.
The team was:
U17 Women: Eleanor & Kathryn Bartle, Eleanor Church, Pippa Earley, Rebecca Keddie, Rhianna Reynolds, Jessica Westley.
U20 Women: Charlotte Davies, Laura Darcey, Ellie Arnfield, Caitlin Dimbleby.
U17 Men: Charlie Heaton, Will Stapleton, Zak Wort.
