Veterans League 2016 match 2 Ewell Court

Women's Report

This 2nd meeting was quite eventful.

Joan Trimble had agreed to throw O60 category in the Discus  Throw. However when she arrived at the track Joan said in jest that she had come to do an 800m. Well, team manager soon had Joan declared and a number pinned onto her vest and Joan made her début in the 800m with a PB to go with it. She is still in shock!

The sky darkened, then it started to rain, heavily. Then the lightning flashed and thunder crashed,  and the men’s  first 3000m race carried on while the men’s second 3000m race waited, huddled together under a tree at the starting line.  After a late start and a promise of a lull in the rain this race finally took place. However the rain got heavier, with more lightning and thunder. Camilla took the decision to cancel the Discus Throw. The women were given the option to run or cancel the 3000m and we voted to run it. We all ran from cold, and we were all shivering on the starting line. We finished wet through but finish we did and felt awesome from doing it.  The 4 x 400m relays were cancelled; well it was getting dark by then and time was ticking on.

Thank you to Susanne Dietrich, Liz Richardson, Gill Broderick, Joan Trimble, Nicki Murphy and Camilla Thrush for doing multi-events, gathering in the points so that we could again finish 2ndplace to Epsom & Ewell Harriers (90 points to 119 points) and remain in 2nd place overall. Also thank you for the many K&P officials that made this event possible.

The next match will be on Monday 13th June, Wimbledon Park.

Men's Report

About halfway through this meeting a torrential thunderstorm moved over the track and settled there for the remainder of the evening. This led to the cancellation of the men's shot and the women's discus for safety and the 4 X 400 relays because the delays caused meant it was too dark. We can't know what the effect of the lost points was on the final result, but we had got a strong potential relay team to mark Adam Bellis's last meeting before moving back to the North West. We came third on the night and go into the next match in second place in the division behind  Hercules Wimbledon.

Adam still managed to make his mark winning the m35 200m. Another of the potential relay squad, this time making his Veterans League debut as an m35 was Jamie McCullagh and he also made an individual mark in the m35 800m winning it in 2:05.7, over 10 seconds clear of 2nd.
Matt Atkins continued his winning ways by taking the m35 3000m, complemented by Andy Robinson's 2nd in the m40s, and David Greenfield who got two 3rds in the m60 800 and 3000m.
In the field Mark Roberts won the m40 pole vault and Chris Smale the m50 hammer while m50 Rob Lowe managed 2nd in the m40 hammer, and Frank Schubert got 2nd in the m50 triple jump (in increasingly wet conditions).
Thanks to David Barrington for combining doing both our m70 events (hammer and 200m) with organising both the women's hammer and then the men's hammer judging (the latter in a downpour during the last two rounds), and to all our officials who helped him and helped with the track events in increasingly taxing conditions.
Thanks to Renzo di Libero and Simon Byway for coming and sorry that their events were cancelled. Our other scorers were Nick Woodhead, Cameron Barlow, David Bell, and Rupert Bole, while Mike May (m50 200) and Ed Paxton (m35 800) did non scoring races.
