Roger Taylor   27.3.1948 - 3.1.2019

The Club is very sad to announce the death of Roger Taylor. Roger Charles Taylor was born and lived in Kingston all his life and joined Surrey AC  (SAC) in August 1962 at the age of 14, and Doris Dean, then General Secretary, remembers his being brought along as what would now be termed a Special Needs teenager.

For the next 50 years or so he was always as keen as mustard to be involved wherever he could, as the club he joined metamorphosed from SAC through Surrey Ladies AC, RBK AC and finally to Kingston AC and Polytechnic H in 1985. He was rewarded for his proud support in 1989 with election to a Vice Presidency. Amongst his contributions, were stints as Equipment Officer and later as a Track Judge, and he was a familiar figure around the club, as well as travelling with teams to matches in the track and field season. During his more active years in the 1980s & 1990s he was most supportive of the likes of club stalwarts, David Dyer and Stan Belton. He was also on the Surrey County AA Officials list and officiated at County Championships.

Roger lived in Porchester Road for many years, very close to what was then Norbiton Athletics Track and is now what we know as Kingsmeadow. His other great love was Kingstonian FC (KFC) and, even in his later years of ill-health, he was still able to travel to KFC’s matches, home and away, to retain his role as a fervent supporter. In the workplace, he was also a well-known fixture for over 30 years at the Kingston branch of Marks & Spencer.

After his parents passed away, his health deteriorated further to the extent that he was accepted by Social Services into sheltered accommodation in Kingston. Here, his life turned for the better, when he met and married, Mary, who was housed in the same accommodation. Sadly, Mary died a few years later and he spent the remainder of his 70 years alone. He was still very keen to help out at Kingsmeadow, but was finding it very difficult as his mobility diminished, despite mentoring and assistance from fellow officials, particularly our Track Referee, Brenda Ford. Up to 5 years ago, he still came to officiate, though less regularly than previously, but he kept in contact with Brenda and this writer. Sadly, he was never well enough again to come along to Kingsmeadow.

Roger passed away at home in Kingston on January 3rd 2019 and his funeral took place at Kingston Crematorium on January 24th 2019, where a number of his fellow club members were present along with representatives from Surrey County AA, and a goodly throng of colleagues from Kingstonian FC, all celebrating his twin sporting loves of athletics and football.

If anyone would like to express their sympathy to his family, please contact our Membership Secretary, Gillian Libretto, who will be able to put you in touch with Roger’s sister, Margaret.
