The final league match of the season took place later than usual, following the postponement of the January fixture. The final series of races also incorporated our club championships for 2018/9 for all age groups from U17 upwards, giving our athletes the opportunity to compete for trophies. Sadly, in a season that has frequently been hampered by illness and injury, few athletes braved the journey and the tough course that lay in wait at Lloyd Park, Croydon.
For those that were able to compete, the course seemed less muddy than usual – though conditions were breezy meaning that the 2-lap 5 mile course was still a challenge! Disappointingly only 4 ladies lined up for the senior race, which sadly meant we had an incomplete team for the first time this season. All 4 competing were veteran athletes and so were to ‘do battle’ for the veterans trophy.
Nicky Atkins continued her good form with a strong run to finish in 56thplace, in a time of 40:01 minutes, to both lead the team home and win the Veterans Club Championship for 2018/9. Congratulations to Nicky! Jess Maranzano and Liz Richardson had a close race - though it was not perfect for either, with Jess being troubled by debris in her shoe causing a painful injury and Liz feeling unwell during and after the race, which unfortunately meant she faded on the 2ndlap. Despite this, Jess finished in a creditable 81stplace (41:46), in her first longer race of the season - with Liz just behind in 83rdplace, in a time of 41:54. Caroline Jeffcote was pleased to finish her season, having competed in all 4 league races, in 190thplace (55:59).
The Division 2 field was the lowest of the season, though still comprised 209 athletes, and the team did well to finish in 19thplace out of 24 teams on the day which will result in a similar league position for the season. We hope that the Summer of 2019 will enable our injured team members to get well and join us again next season!
In the junior races Evie Priest was our sole competitor in the U13 race, again running strongly to finish in 10thplace (of 61 athletes). Well done Evie.
New members to the team for this fun and friendly league next season would be very welcome and in particular we would like to see more junior club members competing - anyone interested in competing next season should please contact Liz Richardson for more information and to join the league mailing list.
