With a swathe of absentees, including all but one of our prolific Under 20s and Under 15s,Team Manager Michele Wicks might have been sorely tempted to go next door and recruit some athletes from the 3000+ crowd watching AFC Wimbledon & Folkestone Invicta wellying the spheroid aimlessly. But perhaps best she didn't.
It was all fairly desperate but the 19 in attendance were suitably exhorted and did well to amass 152 pts, which will keep us in mid-table,with the one fixture at Ashford to go in September.
On the Senior side,we were again particularly indebted to Rachel Burbridge, and to Camilla Thrush and her throwing colleagues,Isabelle Hatton(2B JT 26.01 plus a 74.4pb win over 400H),Minika Davies(1B DT 29.37 as well as a non-scoring 9.52 SP),Jenny Davies(1B SP 9.41) & Mary Waddington(2B HT 19.27). Rachel ran 6 events and included a season's best at 800(2A 2.21.8) as well as 2 pbs in the hurdles(1A 400H 70.5 & 3A 100H 20.3);Camilla came up trumps again with 2 pbs, with the Hammer at 37.30 being an outright Club Open Record and the Javelin a new Club Vets Mark(30.69) - and she will travel to San Sebastian for the World Masters Champs next week in good heart.(Note - sprinters Pat Logan M45 & Mike May M40 also go to Spain - as does this writer's M60 brother,Richard(City of Stoke AC) at 400/400H). Which is by the by,of course and not something, dear reader, you have always wanted to know!
Regulars Liz Richardson & W40 Nicky Atkins plied their trades well as usual in the cause and were joined by W45 Dina Francis, who showed some youngsters the way home & debutante Julie Garner,U13 Maddy's mother, whilst the Under 17 contingent led by Claire Stonestreet also included occasionals Maddy Hardwick(2.48.6 pb over 800) & Anna O'Brien, who performed well enough to suggest that they should surely become regulars.
The Under 15 events looked to be in dire straits, with all the leading half dozen who have contributed substantially to our final positions in the first 4 fixtures missing, but the sole Under 15,Chelsea Downs, was joined by a small clutch of Under 13s,led by our leading performer in the group,Phoebe Haynes, and they did manage to rack up some useful points.Phoebe obliterated her 75 Hurdles best with a 2A in 13.4; new member Nicola Hudson scored our only win in the group with a B string success at the hurdles(15.0) plus a 4.15 LJ, whilst Maddy Garner,Francesca Currie & Sarah Hall all played their parts.
