Preview of weekend one - Bob & Debbie have teams in the Priory Relays at Reigate on Sat 5th,which will give some the opportunity for sizeing up the courses for the second round of both Surrey Leagues two weeks hence, whilst on Sunday there is the 2nd phase of David Denton's Surrey Classic 10k series at Oxshott and,in the traditional Freshers T&F match at Iffley Road, Oxford,Cambridge University follow the now almost equally-traditional K&P pattern by naming Humphrey Waddington for HJ/LJ/TJ/JT & both relays!!! Also in the Light Blues line-up will be Team Southampton's high hurdler Ben Richardson,a K&P adversary this last summer in BAL Div 4. Former 'Blues' Les Hatton,Andrew Arbour & Mark Reed(and any other currently active K&P 'Blues',whom I have overlooked) may well be watching the results with interest.
At Priory Park,K&P's men started well but inevitably slipped back given only 7 offered themselves to run. Jamie McCullagh ran to form leading us home in 4th on leg 1(13.54 -15th fastest of the day);Mike Maranzano kept us in 4th on leg two(14.30);further promising runs from Under 20s,Alex Thomas(15.16) & Ron Taylor(16.07),saw us still up in 10th;whilst TM Bob McDonough(M60)(18.00) & Mike May(M45)(19.26),on legs 5&6,kept us respectable in finishing 16th of some 38 complete teams. The 3-to-score women's race, held in conjunction, was led off to 6th by Rachel Burbridge(16.56-17th fastest),handing to Liz Richardson(21.07) & Nicky Atkins(W40)(19.12). The team placed 21st in 57.15 of the apparent 37 teams closing in.Full results can be found on www.prioryrelays.com
K&P places in the 2nd round of the Ronhill Surrey Classic 10k at Oxshott on Sunday(6th) were - 119 Graham Huntley 44.51;131 Nicky Atkins 45.43;167 Ian Richardson 47.27;184 Dave Gibbons 48.25 & 221 Liz Richardson 50.45 of the 333 finishers. In atrocious conditions, more familiar to crews on the Cam & Isis,Humphrey Waddington & Team Southampton's Ben Richardson, both prominent in last summer's BAL Div 4 campaign, led Cantab to victory over Oxon in the annual Freshers Varsity T&F match at Oxford's famous Iffley Road Stadium. Conditions were such that the HJ was cancelled and the 110H were run over the U20 height for safety's sake, but H. & B.,who were both specially mentioned in subsequent dispatches, took 5 individual events between them and led CUAC to 4 x 100 success, too. From K&P's viewpoint,HW,remarkedly though not unsurprisingly as many will agree, leapt to two impressive PBs in winning the Long Jump at 6.45 & Triple Jump at 13.24,not forgetting a 43.34 2nd in the Javelin.
In the New York Marathon Wheelchair Race,David Weir took 5th and Tushar Patel was 8th.
At the South of Thames 5 at Lloyd Park,we were led home by Jamie McCullagh in 9th with back up from Ron Taylor(75),Bob McDonough(105),Graham Huntley(135) & Geoff Reed(161).In the Womens race,Nicky Atkins was around 20th. Fuller results and team placings as & when.
Team manager,Nicky Atkins, assisted by some mid-week encouragement from coaches Maurice Joyce & Edmund Croall amongst others, would have been delighted with the eventual turnout of 18 for the first Downs League of the winter at Tattenham Corner.Six toed the Under 11 line with Nikolay Schubert(4th) & Oscar Ashford(8th) leading the team home in 3rd place. Anna Hage was first K&P girl home in 15th of the 26 finishers. At Under 13 level, there were 4 in action - Jenny Steinitz(6th) & George Vine(7th) in a desparate sprint for the line led us home to 3rd team slot. In the Under 15,an excellent 8-strong complement took the major team honours with Alain Ashford(4th) & Edmund Croall(5th) in the van. First girl was Kelly Randall - or was it Linda! - in 15th. Congratulations to Brenda Ford - whose involvement with indoor rowing has rekindled that competitive spirit! Avelline Deighton,an accomplished rower, also competed in Birmingham, winning a bronze in the W35-39 group---and Liz Richardson's sister's boyfriend also won a bronze!!!
There were some 25 currently active K&P members in the Kingston Schools CC Champs in Richmond Park(Thurs 24th),jointly organised by Nicki Murphy for KSAA and the Club, who were responsible for the course and the marshals - Doris & Alan Dean/Maurice Joyce/David Dyer/Bob McDonough/Pat Wilks etc. In the Year 7 Girls(44 finishers),Lucy Clacher(11.24) confirmed her recent improvement with an excellent 2nd behind Tiffins teammate,Tara Mossop(11.19) and in the Year 8 Girls(37 finishers),run concurrently with Year 9 on a slightly longer course than Y7,Molly Renfer(11.12) & Maddie Garner(11.25),duathletes & Tiffinians both, took the prime places ahead Coombe GS/Ranelagh's Holly Clemens. Jenny Steinitz(SHS 12.37) & new member Ellie Northway(Tolworth 14.18) were 8th & 17th respectively. In the concurrent Y9 Girls(23 finished),AFD's Maddie Gunn(Tiffins) was,as expected, light years ahead with K&P's Laura Hughes & Georgia Adams(both Hollyfield) 10th & 13th resp. We did flood the Inter Girls race(21 finished) with Harriet Owens(Coombe) edging the title(16.50),ahead of Izzie Penney(Tiffins 3rd 17.15),Maddy Hardwick(Tolworth 6th 18.43),Kelly Randall & Linda Randall(Hollyfield both 8th/9th 19.35&20.08),Stephanie Pearce(Hollyfield 11th 20.25),Jessica Ferman(Coombe 13th 21.16) & Natalie Olivo(Hollyfield 14th 21.43). The Senior Girls, run with the IGs,saw Sarah Harris(Coombe) the winner in 17.48 with fellow sprinter Claire Stonestreet(Tolworth) 7th in a small field. Moving to the Boys,we were sparse - no Y7s but Alex Doe(Hollyfield) was 25th in the Y8 with Adam Raimondo(Tiffins) 33rd of the 45 finishers. The Y9 race saw our Tiffins trio,Patrick Tebble(2nd 15.38),Ciaran Costello(3rd 15.41) & Jonny Miller(7th 16.43) ensuring a team win for their school whilst,in the Inter Boys,Ralph Street & Tim Sagar(both Tiffins) were 2nd 20.13/3rd 20.41 resp. to do likewise - Michael Atkins(Southborough) was 10th(22.17) of the 40 finishers. There were no K&P runners in the SB race, run in conjunction, which finished in an horrendous freak storm, taxing even the most hardy of the officials.Congratulations to those K&P runners who have been selected for the Surrey Schools Championships at Reigate on January 21st next year.
In the weekly Bushy Park Time Trial(26th),Ron Taylor(U20) ran in 5th in 17.51 and Nicky Atkins paced husband John round under his 30 mins target for the first time(29.54).Details on Ranelagh website.
