Written by DB

As a prelude to the Club 7 Miles Championships in Richmond Park,Ron Taylor & Nicky Atkins both raced in the Bushy Park Time Trial in the a.m!! Ron was again 5th in 18.18 whilst Nicky nursed husband John through to a pb of 29.41. See separate report for the Seven.

Sportshall results for Nov 26th are now on the November Round-Up page.

William Mabika(SM60m 7.65/7.74),Martyn Aiessame(U15BSP/LJ 4.62/2.90),Harriet Lester(U17W 60H 9.68/9.58) & brother Gordon(U15BPV 2.70) were at the first adidas indoor Sprint London meet at Sutton on 10th with pride of place to the latter two - nippy first races as an U17 for HL and a pb for GL.

A handful attended the VAC/HW InterClub on Wimbledon Common(VAC) on 10th - Ron Taylor was 14th(37.04),followed by a vets contingent led by Nicky Atkins(39th 41.54),David Greenfield(42nd 43.12),David Gibbons(45th 45.19),Geoff Reed(47th 46.21) & Cashel Riordan(50th 52.50).We were 5th team scoring 3 & 4th scoring 5. My informant tells me both Ron( 4th 18.10) & Nicky(30.08 with husband John 30.09) had already run the weekly Bushy Park Time Trial in the early morning, with Ron sandwiching a track session with Richard Holt at Kingsmeadow in between!!

Highlights of the 2nd Downs League were two winning debuts for K&P - Alistair Woods ran away with the Under 11 race in 12.21,some 30secs ahead of 2nd and Enes Ongoren, recent winner of the Kingston Schools Y8 Championships, followed with a comfortable success over the slightly longer U13 course(12.15);plus the U15s again headed their team race. Elsewhere in the U11s,Oliver Garner(12th),Anna Hage(14th),Nikolay Schubert(15th),Aidan Fahey(16th) & Claudia Noakes(19th) completed - with the team 3rd overall;in the U13s,Molly Renfer edged home first girl in 5th with Phoebe Haynes,Alex Doe & Victoria Douglas in support - with the team winning and going 2nd overall;and in the U15s,Ciaran Costello(3rd 12.30) led us home ahead of Josie Inverdale,Jonathan Miller & Kelly and Linda Randall - with the team in command on the day and overall. Thanks to our officials out on the wild, wild downs again - David D/Humphrey W/Peter W/Maurice J/Bob McD/Peter Covey(E&E),plus Nicky A as TM. For the full results, click on Results on our Main Menu.

And Ross Shaddick took 2nd(15.11) in the Saltram Park,Plymouth Xmas Pud 5k,dressed as Santa. Say no more.

A fine run by Paul Haywood, taking 4th overall(41.41) and just missing a deserved bronze, led the K&P Mens team at the South of Thames 7.5m Champs on Wimbledon Common on Dec 17th to a score of 315 pts. This placed them 7th in the team race, the very best for some time, and one which won them the Special Medals for the leading team which has not placed in the top 3 in the last 10 years. In the excellent back up,Andy Arbour was 38th(44.53),with the 6-to-score team completed by Mike Maranzano 50th(45.49),on his last race before a posting abroad for 4 months,Jamie McCullagh 60th(46.40),V45 Ant Budarkiewicz 71st(47.06) & U20 Ron Taylor 92nd(49.09). Vets Bob McDonough 163rd 57.25(after a fall),David Greenfield 167th(58.28) & Geoff Reed 180th(64.19) made up the 9-man squad(188 fin.). In the Women's race, held concurrently,Avelline Deighton was 16th(56.30) & Nicky Atkins 22nd(58.00) out of a field of 41. The K&P running of all 11 in action, individually and collectively, was heartening and competitive, something we have almost come to expect as a right in recent years - good watching, too. Full results, courtesy of Bels, are on our Results Menu.

In the morning, this time without Nicky,John Atkins had improved his Bushy Park Trial time by well over a minute to 28.15 - and Ron Taylor had managed to restrain himself by not running, too!

However, come Sunday,Nicky was into a successful back-to-back race situation AND with a PB of 44.50(110th) in the final Surrey Classic 10k at Horton Country Park.Graham Huntley(back from injury) was 137th(46.59),then Dave Gibbons 154-47.58 with Liz Richardson 165-48.43 putting one over her other,Ian 175-49.22. Overall(all 3 races combined),Nicky placed 70th/Graham 74th/Ian 97th & Liz 121st - full results on Dave Denton's Running With David site via our Useful Links Menu.

Mike May seems to have been the only brave Christmas boy, running in the 52nd Lauriston Runners Xmas Day Paarlauf -- and getting landed with the final whistle which, for the uninitiated, entails completing the course without help from your running partner! Mike & his HW co-runner Adam Przedrzymirski ran 5miles,203yds to finish 12th pair.

The month was rounded off on the 31st by the Lauriston Runners 7 mile road race in Wombleland, where Jamie McCullagh, loading up the stamina for his sub 1.50 800 come the summer, took 3rd(39.23) and Bob McDonough became the 7th fastest M60 over the course, finishing 24th in 48.40,though again aggravating a recalcitrant achilles.

The Bushy Park Trial Races came thick and fast over the Holiday - well done to those who ran in December who included Rhiannon Mehta(24.59) & Michael Atkins(20.51) in their first outings and newcomer, U17 Matt Taylor(18.55).
