id354-Surrey Championships Croydon January 7th 2006 Report

It was a matter of 'nearly, but not quite' for the K&P reps at Lloyd Park - some exceedingly spirited running, well worth watching but mostly just short of medals.

In the Under 13 Girls event,Molly Renfer justified her mother,Finuala's efforts in organising the team by leading the four home in 13th(14.20),with Maddie Garner(27th 15.21),Phoebe Haynes(39th 15.56) & Francesca Currie(56th 18.49) closing in the team in 7th with 96 pts.Molly & Maddie are also regular Duathlon performers, with area selection already under their belts.Up a group,Josie Inverdale was our sole rep. in the U15 Girls and she continued to confirm her considerable ability by finishing 14th in a large field(18.45) - in fact, she was only edged out of 11th in a frantic rush to the line - and could well find her way into a county selection later in the season.

Moving to the Senior race, another full squad assembled by Debbie Raymond enthusiastically responded by taking 5th(90pts) in the team competition, only 8 pts behind bronze medal status - the finishing positions were another excellent 14th from Rachel Burbridge(35.28),then Avelline Deighton(37th 39.00),Nicky Atkins(44th 40.08),Debbie herself(55th 41.44),Lois Kerrison(63rd 43.31),Liz Richardson(70th 46.09) & Johanna Gibbons(72nd 47.39).

Next stop Guildford for the 3rd Surrey League where more heroics will be anticipated!

Moving to the Boys,we left Robin Shaw to use the K&P lads in the Tiffins team and they responded by helping the School to some medals. After Adam Raimondo placed 78th in the Under 13 race,Ralph Street ran a fair old race in the Under 15s to take a fine 12th(16.27) and lead the team to the bronzes;he was ably assisted by Patrick Tebble(23rd 17.49),Ciaran Costello(24th 17.50),Jonathan Raimondo(42nd 19.43) & Jonny Miller(45th 20.20). In the Under 17s, a fit-again Tim Sagar ran in 25th in 29.07,whilst Alex Thomas grabbed an excellent 5th(31.00) in the Under 20s to lead Tiffins again to medals, this time silvers - Sean Renfer(17th 35.17) was also in the scoring 3;however,the Club U20 team fell before the first hurdle again with only 2 appearing,a recurring disappointment for Michael Huntley(an excellent 12th 32.59) though fortuitously for Alex he was also entered for the school and he was able to switch allegiance.

At senior level,we are beginning to test the better teams, much helped by the arrival of Paul Haywood, but we still struggle for numbers at Championship level and we again fell short with only 4 toeing the line. Paul,a former silver medalist in this event in Boxhill Racers colours, was well up for most of the race(there's half a photo of him on the Belgrave website!) but a niggle prevented his challenging right up front and he was disappointed with 8th(43.21),though this could well get him back into the Surrey team for the Inter Counties. Behind him, there was a fascinatingly fierce battle between Messrs. McCullagh,Arbour & Maranzano - Jamie starting the faster but being pegged back by the steady progress over the 7.5 mile 3 lap course of Mike & Andy. The bookies at the finish refused any money which was just as well since the 3 finished in echelon, with JM(34th 46.47) edging Andy(35th 46.50) & Mike(36th 46.52).The scene in the 'paddock' epitomised their usual formidable commitment in K&P colours.

As with the women,it's on to Guildford next Saturday for more of the same!
